Wow, a DCUM thread that rehashes an old topic. Your endless capacity for wonder is an inspiration to us all.

There's been more than usual right-wing grievance posts lately trying to stir up anger directed at MCPS. Guessing the astroturfers are out in force before the November elections.

You may want to recalibrate: the rejection of empirically-based guidance from public health institutions like the CDC is the MAGA position. So much for right-wing grievance.

Nah, the MAGA positions are:

1. rejection of the possibility that actually this is a complicated issue, not a simple one
2. ignorance of past efforts

I'm not saying you're wrong, I'm just saying you should be able to find a single left-of-center source advocating sending kids (particularly high school kids) to school early rather than later. Other things that are complicated and have failed in the past: a humane health-care system; lead abatement in low-income housing. You can probably think of dozens more. Conservatives and reactionaries can always think of reasons not to do the right thing even in the face of overwhelming evidence it's the right thing to do, that's why they're called "conservatives."

I'm guessing that OP couldn't figure out how to spell dunce either, so went for imbecile.

A borgeioise obsession with spelling is an unerring sign of a mediocre thinker.

Well done Karen, here's a sticker.

Do. That's not what Karen means. You can't fail in both spelling and definitions.

Anyway
My daughter gets home from sports practice at 7pm and we luve 5 minutes from school. I don't see how a later start time is feasible

Yes, my guess is most of the push-back on this is from upper-middle class parents whose kids are over-programmed.

It's not that it's great to send high school kids to school early. It's that the alternatives were either no better, or required spending money that our elected representatives believed to be better spent on other things.

In my ideal universe, school bus transportation would not be a constraint on school start times, because most kids would be able to get themselves to school safely and comfortably without school buses. However, we don't live in my ideal universe.

Really? MCPS is following CDC guidelines just not the extreme Trumpian interpretation.

Regardless sports aren't really part of school just an optional extracurricular and hardly a major consideration.

Once again, those of us in UMC areas have to suffer for equity. Sigh.

So high school athletes are poor folks now?

I'm sorry your kid can't compete physically with their peers but no one's cutting athletics.

Some areas of the south and Midwest have sports meet before school and then again after vs a longer period after school so that might be a consideration.

Not hardly. The kids who do well in athletics have access to gyms, private coaching, equipment, etc that others don't. And some outliers are just talented.

Having one outside interest 9s over programmed?

This staggering of start times is 100% bass-ackwards.

Board of Education Approves Later School Start Times
Level Time Length of Day
High School 7:45 a.m.–2:30 p.m. 6 hours, 45 minutes
Middle School 8:15 a.m.–3:00 p.m. 6 hours, 45 minutes
Elementary School Tier 1 9:00 a.m.–3:25 p.m. 6 hours, 25 minutes
Elementary School Tier 2 9:25 a.m.–3:50 p.m. 6 hours, 25 minutes

This post is unique in that I both agree that school should start later but I also find your tone so douchey that I'll have to refrain from agreeing with you.

Like I said, the science is pretty clear that sending High School students to school at 7:45 is damaging. At the bare minimum the start times should be reversed. HS students should start at 9, elementary schoolers at 7:45. As far as after school jobs and sports, I would think that education and student's mental health should be the priority here.

I was taught younger kids need more sleep. I would rather a high schooler start early than ES. My high school started at 8, but I think all the levels started around the same time.
