Why are book banners showing up at FCPS SB meetings

Anonymous
ok, so she read the book in the meeting, while there were kids in the meeting..

Why did the board said her to stop, if the book is part of school library and every kid is eventually going to read ?

Why the board stopped the meeting ? Were they embarrassed, when they heard it vs reading it ?

The local Democrats are absolutely ruthless in their demonization of anyone who challenges them. If you don't like them wasting money on "anti-racist" speakers at $20K a pop, you're a racist. If you think the contract with the third-party boundary consultant is a waste of time and money, you're an elitist. If you thought TJ was admirable before they started messing with the admissions, you're a bigot. And if you don't like them stocking their library shelves with graphic descriptions of underage sex, you're a prude.

I think they are going to get an eye opening in the 2023 School Board elections, even if they can eke out victories this fall.

The issue is the scale and motivation behind those "complaints".

The GOP is actively pushing activists into these local groups to stir discourse and push their agenda. They even had someone on the TJ PTA stirring up trouble.

They amplify these issues out of context - e.g., screaming at the SB meeting instead of bringing it up for review, screaming about masks, etc.

It's all just irrational - not based on valid concerns - and playing at people's fears.

Oh please. *eye roll*

All kinds of things can be “shocking” out of context. You’re like the people who decide that abortion is wrong simply because you watch a film of the procedure and it seems disturbing. You know what else is disturbing? Heart surgery. Bowel surgery. Brain surgery. You know what else is creepy out of context? Book scenes that depict murder, suicide, rape, overdose, etc.

If you read the passage in context as some kind of advertisement for or endorsement of sex….there something really wrong with you.

Exactly.

Why are we defending these types of books? I don't see the need for them in the school library. Is there a shortage of books to stock the library? Yes it belongs in the public library or your personal home library but not in schools.

The GOP / Koch organizations are forcing these "issues" by sending in professional organizers to local “grassroots” parent groups.

So you think "activists" are reprehensible if they come from one party, but laudable if they come from the other party, and that anyone who agrees with them is a dupe who is being played?

Just the level of arrogance and condescension that is likely going to lead to the unseating of this insufferable School Board in two years. Pity it can't happen sooner.

It starts with a bit of censorship and next think you know it's a dictatorship with only authorized propaganda from your Dear Leader.

I think it's disgusting for any political party to send in trained operatives to manipulate local school issues for political gain.

To infiltrate the PTA? To scream at the SB? To rip masks off of teachers?

It's disgusting.

Every time I read a piece by or about Asra Nomani like Michele Martin's NPR interview, I come away respecting her more.

I know you're just looking for an excuse to keep calling her a "Trumphumper" (today's alternative to the usual "RWNJ" insult), but you should be more selective in the clippings you post. You are inadvertently highlighting the fact that Nomani has the temerity to think for herself. If only we didn't have 12 people who comprise a dysfunctional echo chamber on the current FCPS School Board.

+1 Why does this even need to be discussed? Of course those books should be removed from the school libraries. On to another topic.

There's something to be said for a naturalized American citizen who carefully weighs the positions of a candidate and acknowledges her many differences with the candidate she votes for, as compared to those who simply and repeatedly pull the lever for candidates because they came from a particular party.

Wow. That is even worse.

I can maybe get the Republican voters voting on auto-pilot. But to actively choose Trump? That is majorly fcked up.
