I know stainless is more "in" -- but we have a very small kitchen (not even eat-in size) with white cabinets, white sink and light counters. It seems like stainless appliances will "jump" out too much and look blocky and make the kitchen appear even smaller whereas the white will look more seamless.
Any thoughts? We are planning to invest in nice appliances and although we're not leaving imminently I don't want to make a mistake for resale purposes and buy something people think is icky or dated (although I am also starting to wonder if the stainless trend might itself become dated soon -- it feels like it's been around a while). Also the current dishwasher and over-the-range microwave are both white and are in good shape -- so it's just the range and fridge that need replacing. So I was also wondering if it looks dumb to mix and match -- i.e., get a stainless fridge and range but leave the dishwasher and possibly also the microwave (although that's a lot less $ to replace, but I can't see replacing the dishwasher just to match it). thanks! |
If everything is white, go white. |
Yay to the white appliances. And it doesn't look good to mix and match. |
I'd rather have whhite than black for some reason- NOT A RACIST thing in one iota- its just that white brightens up the room- we personally have stainless- now if you have part stainless- you do have to gow ith black- white is just a stark contrast. |
White looks cheap to me. It's the color the builders use for their base kitchen. |
We have a small kitchen too and opted for white, it brightens things up. |
I'd go with white in your situation. I agree that mixing white and stainless would not look good. We have white appliances and white cabinets and I like the look. |
The all-white makes a small kitchen look bigger and brighter. You can use the money you're saving by only doing a partial appliance replacement and switch out the countertops and backsplash, if you want a new look. |
I had a tiny kitchen and had all black appliances. It actually made the kitchen look better. The appliances somehow receded. Having said that, white is a safer color. You can decorate around it in almost any style, from country to modern. Let other things like wall color pop. |
I meant bigger. I had had almond colored appliances, changed nothing else but the color, and it made my kitchen look bigger. |
Don't mix and match. The next people probably won't like your cabinets, counters, etc (not a comment on your taste, just on people.)
Unless your kitchen is nice enough to be a strong selling point, then "looks clean, looks good enough" is what you need. Don't spend the extra on stainless, unless you want it. I have white. It looks nice. |
Stainless steel is the avocado of the 2000s. In a few years, we will all be looking at them and thinking "wow. what were we thinking?"
And I have SS appliances, and really like them. But I think they will look dated at some point in the near future. |
you don't say, but what color are your cabinets, floor and wall? Just avoid white with these, because you want some distinction between the appliances and the cabinets, etc. Basically, if I had all-white appliances, it would probably look best with painted taupe cabinets, walls, etc. and not an all-white mess. |
PS I think stainless steel is a little more timeless than avocado 1975. If I had all white, functioning, kitchen appliances, I think they are timeless too, and if I were moving in the next few years I would keep them and focus on other, cosmetic aspects of the kitchen or house. |
This was exactly my dilemma. We had a small kitchen badly in need of renovation. We got white cabinets that look fabulous. The stove and the oven were already stainless steel and did not need replacing. Only the refrigerator needed to be replaced. So, after much thought, we decided to go with a stainless steel fridge, thinking that then all the appliances would match and we would pull the look together. We're happy with it. White kitchens are very in and I think they will stay that way. You can't really go wrong. |
