I need someone smarter than me to do an analysis. How does this dress look so amazing on Grace Kelly and so meh on Vanky? Is it the boning in Ivanka’s? The way Vanky Carrie’s herself? Ivanka is a beautiful woman with a beautiful figure, how does this uncanny valley effect, as the other poster put it, happen? Is it solely that she doesn’t know who she is?

Grace Kelly is 26, Ivanka is 41. The original dress is of it's era and even though it has spaghetti straps, they are ornament, it really is strapless with a full foundation and padding. Today visible corsetry and sheer dresses are en vogue. Not sure where this knockoff came from, but it's probably someone working with current bridal trends, so they hit those marks instead. But for all the visible trusses it's not actually a strapless bodice. It has clear straps that hold it up. So it's more of a flimsy thing thrown over the body, than a shell that creates a form. The fabric looks chintzy, and the original had more draping and a deep V in back which hasn't been recreated. No one has credited this dress to Elie Saab.

Saab did all the dresses for the party. See Vogue article below:

https://en.vogue.me/weddings/tiffany-trump-elie-saab-wedding-gown-lebanese-michael-boulos-florida/

"Elie Saab was also the designer behind the dresses worn by the bride’s mother, Marla Maples, and her half-sister and maid of honor, Ivanka Trump. With the wedding’s theme being pastel shades, Maples and Ivanka wore dresses in lilac and light blue colors respectively.”It’s a Lebanese American wedding, so we were so happy to have Elie Saab create the magic,” Maples shared with People magazine. The groom and the men from the Trump family were all dressed in black tuxedos with floral lapels and bow ties."

Elie Saab was the perfect pick for this. He did a great job with all the dresses. If anyone but Ivanka had worn the dress, it'd have been beautiful. But we hate her, so we hate the dress.

I disagree, I think the dress is a mess, no matter who wore it. I don't like the sheerness, I don't like the lack of structure. It's terrible.

Here's a good picture showing Kimberly dressed as a bat, with her son by Eric Villency

Just a reminder of what Kimberly used to have

Why is she wearing hose??

Kimberly entire outfit is unfortunate. Those shoes don’t fit her wide width feet. Don Jr is a hot mess too so too so I guess they have that going for them.

I don’t hate the dress, but am sort of astonished she didn’t choose another color or some slight variations. Going up against iconic Grace Kelly in her prime takes some chutzpah. I will say Ivanka as Grace was better than Kim K. as Marilyn.

It not only takes chutzpah. It’s also confusing. Wouldn’t ivanka want her own take on the dress? Why would she want an identical replica? Wouldn’t she want a dress that made reference to Grace Kelly’s dress but wasn’t a copy? This woman’s clothing choices are so confounding. I know she thinks she’s a fashion icon but an icon wouldn’t copy someone else’s dress.

It’s VERY confusing to me as well. What was the designer thinking? We know Vanky has no sense but Ellie Saab or anyone with a fashion background should know better. It’s not just a copy of the dress- it’s a significantly cheaper looking copy without the same quality of material or craftsmanship. Yuck.

Is there any evidence at all that Tiffany was backing away from this family? Publicly, at least, she has always supported her father. She spoke for him at the Republican conventions. She publicly appeared with him as president. She wasn’t AS involved, but she was involved and seemed to show no regret.

She’s been involved as much as permitted. She gave speeches and would hang out at the White House. Her father clearly prefers the older children and may not have had much of a relationship with Tiffany before he ran for office. He is on record saying she’s ugly. I don’t understand why she or the older kids are so desperate for his approval. Maybe Barron will break free.

I’m the PP who said that it was the material/tailoring is what’s off - I actually didn’t hate the idea of the dress (I usually really dislike Ivanka’s style). It’s just an impossible act to follow, and since it was a poor imitation, it’s a miss.

Meant to add, if it had been modernized with a softer/gathered sleeveless (rather than strapless) rather than the sheer boning thing going on, it would have been a nice homage, rather than a bad copy.

The Grace Kelly imitation dress is an odd choice. The other women in the bridal party didn't choose to wear dresses Hollywood icons wore in famous movies. Be yourself, I say. Ivanka must be insecure to have to wear something like that. I love the original dress, but you guys are right that the modern version is a poor replica.

All the kids want to be loved by him because he's a narcissist. Narcs are professionals at getting everyone to fight over them. There's usually a golden child (Ivanka at one point) and then scapegoat children. To be left out would probably be painful. I can see why the adult kids get sucked in and hope Barron can live a normal life--not that his mom is normal...

Javanka attended the World Cup in Qatar. Ivanka posted a bunch of travel photos in her all white attire, in addition to the very curious photos of her also in all white, with Qatar’s prime minister.

Clearly I don’t know how to post a pic. I really wish it was easier posting a pic, but I’ve never been able to do it.

Do you have actual dressmaking/couture cred, or are you just opining freely? I ask since most women on DCUM think Ann Taylor Loft is the height of fashion.
