Perfect 600 on math SOL

Anonymous
Is this a big deal in third grade or somewhat common?

That’s great. It’s not common. Note that it does not mean that your kid got every question correct.

It's becoming more common as more parents are spending resources on test taking/test prep classes. It's a great achievement but I wouldn't think of it as a "big deal" in terms of how the child will achieve in the future. Colleges will still need to see an entire picture of the child's life including personality and extracurricular/leadership activities.

Oh that’s nreresrong, regarding not every question correct. I just assumed that’s what it was. Do you mind explaining?

We did not prep for the test. I think my kid loves math and is ahead of his peers but that does not necessarily mean he’s going to ace math easily through high school and beyond! I just wasn’t sure how rare a 600 is and couldn’t find any statistics on it online.

Because it’s a scaled score. Here’s a definition of a scaled score:
“A scaled score is a representation of the total number of correct questions a candidate has answered (raw score) that has been converted onto a consistent and standardized scale.”

There are 60 questions on the test. The testing board determines how difficult the test is and how many questions a student must answer correctly. Then then assign a corresponding scaled score to that number correct. For example, they might say that any kid who gets 37 out of the 60 questions correct will pass with a score of 400, and anyone who gets 48 questions correct will get a score of 500 (pass advanced) From there they might say that any kid who gets 58, 59 or 60 correctly will translate into a scaled score of 600.

I think it’s not uncommon.

Not unusual if your kid performs above grade level. This is a test of mastery of grade level expectations. Those are not high expectations for many kids in system.

I really don’t know - though mine got 600 and I can see from the score sheet that he still got a couple wrong.

DS always scores perfect to near on SOL math. SAT was 760. Math grades were B’s and C’s.

Is your child in AAP or general ed. For general ed it is unusual. For AAP, it isn't common, but it isn't uncommon either. Congrats to your kiddo! Shows strong mastery!

Funny story- my kid has always been good at math but 3rd grade teacher was concerned she was not getting concepts so actually had her put in a group to get extra help. I was more concerned with her lack of interest in reading but teacher kept saying she was really strong in reading. DD was mad about math group.

Anyway, gets almost perfect score on math but does not pass reading.

We tested a little over 100 students in third grade this year. I believe there was one 600.

That's a low performing school. Or one where all the more studious kids got sucked out into the AAP center.

I think pass rates were down this year for whatever reason. We had no 600s in math (14 Pass Advanced) and one 600 in reading out of over 100 tested.

The school did make the Board of Education Distinguished Achievement Award part of this list: https://www.fcps.edu/news/five-fcps-schools-earn-2018-governors-award-educational-excellence-fcps-honored-distinguished

I was surprised to hear how many kids at our base school did not pass the math SOL this year. Idk if it was an anomaly or what. I do feel kind of "bad" that my kid's 600 was attributed to the AAP center rather than the base school, because I do think K-2 provided some of the instruction there, too!
