Even though the new magnet selection might look like a penalty to families with means, mcps knows the parents will pay on their own to make up what Is missing no matter how unfair they feel.

Oh my god! Then the Magnet selection process was actually a public fraud! How to identify families with means? Families from those CES centers? It had in fact became a penalty to kids in those centers.
Why allowed them to apply and to take the test as if they still had a fair chance?

No one cares about MCPS plans. It is just to appease the political interests of certain groups.

And includes no specifics, naturally.

I haven't read this whole thread, but it is a bit disheartening. Kids do get in from competitive home schools. My child was admitted to both programs, home school is Frost. DC had 99ile across the board on magnet test. And in private, DC got 99iles on ERBs for private school norm last year.

I'm sure some on this thread would claim that DC was admitted because DC is URM, but that fact was not disclosed on any application materials.

I think parents should have more facts because just assuming what the profiles are of admitted students.

Last name not disclosed in the application? and the specially designed questionnaire at the beginning of the test? I saw some people to change their lastname from 15+ characters to Jordan, "Michael Jordan", it is sad but for good reasons.

But it's on the student profile. They ask you to fill it out when you enroll in school.

We didn’t fill out race box in profile and have Anglo-sounding name. (Most others I have met with this last name are white). But in reality, DC has been working 2 or 3 grades ahead in most subjects and outperforms kids in top private. Perhaps my child is a unicorn, but I doubt it given the extremely bright, hardworking families I meet every day. I this area you can fill classrooms with a diverse group of gifted students without lowering standard.

We were thinking of public for economic reasons and naively believed that DC could find bright friends from varying SES backgrounds. These threads make me very concerned about the mentality of families in Montgomery County.

Don’t assume until you have all the data.

Should read “In this area,....”

The solution to this is simple. They need to expand the program to accommodate more students. This is especially true at the MS level which presently takes less than 2%.

I'm so sorry. This thread has made me nauseous, and I'm not from an URM group. I was thinking to myself how disheartening it would be for a parent of a child who is URM and accepted to magnets to read this thread. I can't even imagine the mixed feelings when your child has accomplished so much, and there's still so much bullshit surrounding it.

The only thing to add, is these threads are full of parents who's kids were *not* accepted to the magnet. I know you will find a better cross section at the actual school.

Thats correct there are a lot of complainers here. Thats they are here and no one else. Its not an accurate sample of all MCPS parents by any means.

I actually think the we love MCPS posters are MCPS staff. I seldom here anyone say positive things about MCPS. Its a pretty screwed up system that constantly tries to spin its PR but is pretty inept at it.

Our school just received the letter from the MCCPTA committee that students from our school were deemed not eligible for admission or waitlist because the home middle school would be sufficient. It has pissed off many who have no intention of applying or busing their kids across the county everyday.

Based on all the testing data in MCPS (and honestly nationally) yes, your child is something of a unicorn.

According to the PARCC results for 8th grade Geometry (reasonable assumption for kids aiming for a magnet) there were:

499 White students that exceeded expectations.
20 AA students that exceeded expectations.
25 Hispanic students that exceeded expectations.
435 Asian students that exceeded expectations.
