SSFS HOS leaving

Classes in the PAC had to be held in the MPR of the Athletic Center due to the heating issue

Both HVAC systems need to be replaced and the AC in the AC hasn’t worked all summer and summer camp has been there!

If you had a great experience with athletics, expect that to change drastically. That department is down 4, yes 4 people from last year and no one has been hired to replace anyone. Both AD’s and the Athletic Trainer are gone, along with another PE teacher. PE classes will be covered completely differently, there aren’t enough coaches for teams.

My sports-loving kid has now lost their coach/teacher (and college rec letter writer), athletic director they really liked, and the trainer who has patched them up for years. They are pretty bummed about it.

I realize they are short of money but how can some programs continue without replacing lost staff at all?

My understanding is that the hcac repairs were to cost $4 million- which is not money they had.

As they’ve said in the emails, they have the budget for the amount of kids that are enrolled. They are advertising positions in athletics and will have new folks in place. A lot going on behind the scenes I’m sure.

Actually they are not replacing those positions yet. They have not been advertised on AIMS or the school website. The only Athletics positions advertised is a MS volleyball coach and a JV volleyball coach. The PE head will be the interim AD - and teach a full load. The former AD did not teach at all. And there’s no athletic trainer in place.

If you aren’t concerned yet, you should be …

If the school can share the contact information for the teacher/coach they can still write a letter of rec. We did this with a teacher who left teaching all together but had taught my daughter for two years.

Not concerned. I trust the school. I understand that there are things happening that I don’t know about and I accept that. Athletic director WAS advertised. They tend to take down positions when they have enough applicants and are moving forward. Athletic trainer just happened - they need time to post a position. School doesn’t start till after Labor Day. Give them time.

1978 Alumni says: "Go Woke, Go Broke" Location is no longer a reasonable commute from DC proper or closer - in suburbs. Lot of other choices for the rich liberals who live in those areas. People who live near the school mostly go to the excellent nearby Public and Catholic schools. Very small actual paying market for DEI/woke focused programs way out in the country.

Definitely sounds like it. But per the board “when we asked exiting families to share their reasons for leaving SSFS, they identified: costs of tuition, student culture and a misalignment between the school's culture and their families values as their key reasons for departure” - 2/3 top reasons for withdrawals were culture related. Something that changed did not appeal to the majority of families leaving. Of course more students are staying then leaving, but for the departing ones something in the environment felt amiss. This was not the case under TG.

But we don't know what options they provided- Did they provide options such as "HOS" or "turnover of administrators" as reasons for leaving in the exit survey? Or do they expect that these are wrapped into culture? I'd say it is all related.

It wasn’t a list of preselected options. You just shared what you wanted.

The career page on the SSFS website has changed overnight…there were many more postings yesterday than there are this morning. Athletic Director was on there, so I would assume they have completed that search. Back in June/Early July they were not hiring to fill any major positions other than one in advancement…over the last few weeks there have been many postings added for positions we didn’t think they *could* fill. So, I take this as a good sign.

If they are filling positions, it should be obvious from the faculty directory which will list the names of people holding these positions, and the school would be sending us new hire announcement in the next couple of weeks before school starts. If both these things don't happen then I would not trust them to be doing the right thing just because they stopped searching.
