Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS)

They could change ES boundaries and do that without grandfathering, since people won’t feel as strongly about that, and say they are pausing MS and HS boundary changes until they are ready to open the new HS out near Carson. That would maximize the credit they get to take from buying the KAA and reduce angst over boundary changes.
If they give one part of the county a new HS no one was expecting and give everyone else boundary changes few want, they are jeopardizing their political futures. |
This makes sense. By the way, on Nextdoor, there is a concerted effort by Great Falls/Langley parents to stop the KAA purchase. I have been sympathetic to these Langley families in the past, because I agree with having kids stay where they are. I, too, wanted my neighborhood to stay put. But THRU was picking my neighborhood to go to a journey comparable to the Langley one. Except, we like our nearby school. Carson is split between Oakton, South Lakes, and Westfield. The kids that go to Westfield are separated from it by commercial and industrial developments. This is not conducive to building a "community." Oakton is a ridiculous commute for Carson students. The KAA site would have a "community" around it which is a good thing. The boundary would easily be reasonable and compact--not gerrymandered. It would alleviate "overcrowding" at Chantilly which is cited frequently by the SB members. It would eliminate an extremely long and hard commute for many students. I was disturbed when the site was given to KAA years ago with no community input. I do believe that the BOS put political pressure on them because of the protest by the Burke area. Here is a chance to make it right. |
Can you share the post? I’ve seen GF residents concerned about the lack of transparency, but I haven’t seen any organization come out against the purchase outright. I think the concerns have been that the school board just thrust this on the county a couple hours before the vote and hasn’t really explained anything about the $150 million purchase. |
You’re talking about the same posts as PP and just characterizing them differently. |
Of course the Great Falls families are behind an effort to stop the purchase. Anything that might negatively impact their kids is bad even if it 1) makes sense and 2) is good for other kids. God forbid that something happens that might decrease the student numbers at Herndon and lead to kids being shifted to Herndon from Langley. Far better to keep a massive split feeder out of Carson and shift kids all over the place between SLHS, Westfield, Oakton, Chantilly, Centerville, and Herndon. All that matters is that the kids at Langley stay put. |

If the KAA purchase somehow happens, there are a few names that might work:
Oak Hill HS (close to Oakton, but we also.have South Lakes and South County) West County HS (close to Westfield and West Springfield, but other high schools have similar names, as well) Floris HS |
Nuance is hard for feeble minds, but being critical of a process is different than being against the school. Show us the post that has got you riled up, or are you just a neighbor hater? |
Do we think they’ll send all of oak hill elementary there to make space at chantilly? |
We've no idea. Remember, we are anonymous posters on DCUM. However, I would expect they would send all of Oak Hill Elementary there. Aside from Discovery Square, that is the closest neighborhood to the site. |
No. I've thought the county wide boundary move was ridiculous from the beginning. But, I can also see that getting a very good purchase that would solve a lot of issues is wise. Even the School Board, like a broken clock, can sometimes do the right thing. And, FWIW, the person raising this issue on Nextdoor lives very close to Herndon High--on the Herndon side of Rte 7. And, yes, I live near the KAA site. But, it is an opportunity that is likely now or never. Remember, they've told us that they couldn't find a good site for a Western High School. This is a good site. It is adjacent to the communities that have the need. It provides community, proximity, and solves a need frequently expressed by the School Board: relief for Chantilly. The Great Falls people may have a point about the process, but there is not time to discuss it further. And, again, I would be happy for them to stay put. But, to keep another neighborhood for having what it has needed for a long time is just sour grapes. |
Okay, but questioning the process is different than advocating against the school, and we’ve seen nothing that gf residents are against the school. The gf-hater is just making controversies up to suit her anti-Langley agenda. |
Just as an fyi that Nextdoor post was made by 2 individuals. It doesn’t represent Langleys view or great fall’s view as a whole. I think what everyone wants, Langley or not, is transparency. This school may be a great deal. But to purchase it when nothing but 25 million was applied for a western school means another school isn’t getting their renovation or expansion. Centreville? Also they were in a big deficit for the operating budget so how are they staffing a whole new school? There has been no mention of this sale at any BRAC meeting. Or boundary review meeting. |
This site is adjacent to the community that needs it. The likelihood of finding a better site--or anything close to it is very low. This requires fast action. The school only announced its closure in February. Please do not begrudge your neighbors the right to have a school that suits the needs of the community because you do not want to move. The poster claimed "transparency" but never mentioned that she lived on the Herndon side of Rte 7--very near Herndon High. I'm glad for Langley people to stay put--but be honest about it. This is not about transparency. While I would also desire transparency, it would be foolish to pass this up. They've promised this school for years. Here is the post from Nextdoor: "I am so disheartened by this decision by FCPS. I have no way to weigh in on the actual decision to purchase this school because they made no effort to announce their intent (not even in the agenda for the meeting or the vote was held) or give enough details to understand the decision. I have no information about how they are going to afford the $150 million they are approving to spend on this project. I have no way of understanding how they are going to staff such a school when they were not even able to get the full 7% raise for the staff they have this year and have struggled to fully staff the schools we have. They continue to misunderstand my and those that think like myself's upset as not liking the decision. My problem however is that FCPS continues to fail to provide meaningful community engagement and transparency when making major decisions that impact our community. They frequently state they're transparent and engage with the community, but but as this post mentions they created the BRAC to represent the community and provide scenarios for boundary changes, but so far the BRAC is racing to catch up. When speaking to members of the BRAC, they don't know what their exact role is as so far they have just been presented scenarios and given minimal ability to evaluate them or give feedback. We were told that the recent community meetings the BRAC would have more time in June to do so. We will have to see what this approved purchase does to those scenarios. But it certainly brings into question any feedback the community was asked to give when they had no idea this was even a possibility." |
So the poster claiming that GF is against the school based on this post is just a straight up liar. Zero credibility for the Great Falls-hater and her agenda. Laid bare for all to see. |

I found this article to be helpful https://www.ffxnow.com/2025/06/16/fcps-surprises-with-purchase-of-discontinuing-herndon-private-school/?fbclid=IwZXh0bgNhZW0CMTEAAR40IEEW6qtDtnYPEmLUIxeui85A-tpLpeP9Nz2xXcRCkv9lwMrmsa4w_0Ab-g_aem_Oyu5dxcm5Hn4xYndvoKmNA
Also I had no idea there were two great falls citizens groups and that the one who wrote this letter was ousted for not being transparent about financial information. Y’all have left that part out!! |
