Thoughts on Mclean Youth Soccer partnering with Coerver to take over the Juniors program

Is this more because of attrition of coaches who used to handle Juniors and lack of finding adequate replacements or will Coerver really be an upgrade?

This is an upgrade.

This is interesting. What happened to the coaches? Don't know much about coerver.

MYS is a large club with a lot of coaches. Every year there is some turn over.

The MYS juniors program has always been a great program for players who show talent at an early age and want to develop their technical skills. If your child is not selected, do not give up on soccer. Some children develop later.

I know nothing about the decision to go with Coerver, but from what I have heard it is a strong program.

My sense is that it will be the best development program in the area for this age group under the new partnership.

Juniors is a good program overall for development and this should solidify even further and remove any variability seen when Juniors coaches turn over.

The coach(es) in Juniors also coached travel for teams in U9-U12. So there was somewhat of a continuation in consistent development. Wonder how Coerver will "pass" the players along to travel coaches. I'd imagine U9 and U10 coaches will have to be involved to a certain degree.

i can't believe MYS staff is posting on here. you can tell by the answers.

talk to PARENTS who have done juniors.

It is a failed program. poorly designed and implemented. moneygrab. they take all who show.

R u kidding MYS? Posting on a parents discussion board. Sheesh.

again, don't come here and go find a parent with an older travel player who did this program and get their answer to your questions. price is outrageous now. talented staff is gone.

Coerver is marketing.

We did Juniors years ago with our DC. It was a year of impersonal and tedious group exercises and several dropped it, but the talented male and female coach they had recently improved it. They are both leaving. Coerver is a name McLean uses to sell its summer camp FBOW. Most McLean coaches will tell you that U8 is better spent being on an actual team, and then adding in one extra night of Coerver type footwork. A full year of Coerver Method Juniors sounds like an experiment with no track record, but probably was an easy solution given the loss of two good coaches. I guarantee you that if they were not leaving, they would not be using Coerver.

I disagree with the above awkward rant against the program.

I can't speak about Juniors from many years ago but can say that most recently, it has been a great development program for U8 players aiming for U9 travel. The two coaches that are leaving are a big loss for the club. They not only developed players from a technical standpoint but also focused on developing the mental aspect of developing as a player. A lot of focus was placed on letting players solve problems/issues among each other instead of the coaches being more authoritarian. My DS improved over the year and developed other aspects of his game that aren't really focused on at this age like gamesmanship, caring for injured teammates and respecting their peers.

Now that they are gone, I do not know how that dynamic will work between an outside company and the players. I also don't know of any club that brought in an outside soccer development company to run an age group entirely. MYS might miss on the coaching philosophies that its own coaches teach to the players.

Where are the good former juniors mentioned in the posts above moving to?

I would say majority stay at McLean for U9. Don't know what happens at the older age groups. Pretty sure families look at what is best for their players like any other situation.

Sorry--my post was missing a word. I was wondering where the good former coaches were going to.

How much are they charging now annually for this? Do you get to play in any inter-club scrimmages with an outside group running it?

I believe one moved to a club closer to their home and the other going to Grad school (could be wrong)

Last I remember it was around $1k. The games are 4v4 inner-squad games between each other (+/- 45 players). I remember being told that playing against other clubs would be looked into but it never happened. I have no idea how or if it will change with Coerver taking over.
