How do you play on two soccer teams?

Anonymous
DS is returning to his travel team but wants more field time. He is a weaker player on his team and really wants to improve. We keep hearing about kids playing on both a travel and rec team or a travel and select team. Where do you find a select team that allows this? Both MSI Classic and SAM Select don’t allow it per their websites but we keep hearing about kids doing this. Are people just omiting the fact their child plays travel or is there a legit way to make this happen?

What age group? I have a DC in the same situation and considered this as an option but afraid the rec games would conflict and couldnt commit to practices etc. He for sure needs more playing time and as it starts to get more competitive he rides the bench and only gets 5-10mins playing time. Granted this is u11 and I would sign him up for a different club.

My DS U17 plays rec and travel. Luckily his rec games are on Sat and travel on Sun, he was never told he couldn't. He likes his rec team because all his friends play and most of the boys they play against all know each other, it much less stressful than travel and between the both games on the weekend he gets plenty of play time. Plus 4 or 5 days a week of practice.

My child is currently u10. We are looking at doing this next season. On a good day our son plays 10 minutes on the field because he is often in goal. We’ve seen his field skills and confidence deteriorate over this past year while the other players with more field time get better and better. We wish we had spoken up early on about so much time in the goal but our child enjoys it and plays exceptionally well there. We have done privates to work on foot skills but those privates aren’t a substitute for game play. We really think an extra game a week where he is playing at a lower level will instill some confidence. We were at a tournament today where more than one parent mentioned their child is doing this.

What rec league allows this?

.

MSI Classic allows up 3 players dual rostered on their U13 and older teams. It is fairly common to see that at that age. Most EDP and NCSL games are Sunday and most Classic games are Saturday so it is feasible but you will have conflicts. However, you cannot play in MSI rec or SAM rec if you are playing Classic, Select, or Travel. So you could play a lower level MSI Classic team and a travel team, or a lower level MSI Classic team higher level MSi Classic team but not in the same age groups. I don't think SAM Select has any restriction on age groups. I think you can dual roster at younger ages in SAM Select. This is all detailed in the rules for SAM and MSI Classic.

My DD dual rostered at U11 on a U11 rec and U12 rec team in SAM. Next year she dual rostered on U12 EDP team and U13 MSI Classic team. As a U13 she played EDP U14 and NCSL U13. The trick is finding a coach who is flexible about practice and game conflicts. Easier to find in MSI Classic than NCSL or EDP. Advise you be upfront with secondary team that you may miss some games.

No one would tell you he cannot do it unless you tell your rec coach you are doing it. I have heard there are some rec leagues (maybe in DC) that allow this but most don't.

Arlington allows it.

SFL (a rec league in VA) does NOT allow a travel player to play/be rostered in their games. There is a fine to the club if this is discovered during pregame roster check. So make sure your kid is not playing rec within SFL.

I’m the OP. We are actually in Mo Co. It doesn’t seem to be allowed in any of the leagues around us either. I saw above the mention of Arlington but I can’t imagine adding that drive since we already spend so much time in the car.

There are kids who do this "illegally," in violation of their league rules, but it's poor sportsmanship and unethical. We know a few, and the other parents don't think very highly of those families.

The situation we see is usually kids playing in a rec league like MSI and a select or travel team. I don't know any that play in two higher level leagues as they would usually need to be part of USA soccer.

Have you tried checking with smaller house rec leagues to see if they allow it? MSA? YMCA?

Sorry, I see 00:55 explained a few ways to dual roster on select or travel teams by registering in different age groups.

Arlington allows you to play in their rec league and travel teams. Maybe it's their ADP league and not there rec league. not positive. They limit the number of travel players per team to keep it as "fair" as possible. I know another club does this to. Just can't think of it. Maybe Alexandria? I don't know much about Montgomery County.

Stoddert does. It would be better to get individual training vs play more games. The coach is most likely look for you kid to play differently, not do more of the same.

join a futsal team instead of another field team
