How do you play on two soccer teams?

Anonymous
My child did MSI Classic on Saturdays and Stoddert travel on Sundays.
I'm not sure it was a great idea and we dropped MSI after one season... ultimately it was too much soccer.

MSI classic allows it. My DS did it and I know plenty who do it. MSI Classic and Sam Select allow it.

MSI absolutely does not allow kids to play MSI Classic and Sam Select at the same time. You also can't play MSI Classic and MSI Rec. They are very clear about this. I don't know whether you can do Sam Select and Sam Rec.

There are sanctions if you do this, not just against your child but against the coaches, if you get caught. But it seems like they sometimes look the other way.

I know people who don't think highly of the parents who do this in violation of the rules but I don't know of anyone who would file a complaint with the league.

Maybe I am not understanding but it is not a violation. It is called double-carding and MSI Classic teams are allowed to double-card a certain number of players. .

They limit the number of travel players per team to keep it as "fair" as possible. I know another club does this to. Just can't think of it. Maybe Alexandria? I don't know much about Montgomery County.

It is definitely Rec and Travel. Plenty of kids do it. They limit the number but it still isn't "fair" to the rec kids!

My son wanted to stick with the MSI team he had been with since he was 6 so when he joined a travel team at 11, we were really upfront with the coach and parents of the MSI team were ok with it, understood that he was only going to one of the practices and only some of the games, and were happy to keep a good player on the roster. I think this only works if the MSI coach and parents are ok with it and there are no hard feelings that we always prioritized the travel games. It helped that the MSI team was very casual and friendly. There wasn’t the nastiness about play time that can happen with travel.

It’s both...two kids per team team can be travel or adp. You cannot have two travel and two adp (total of) on the same team.

Lets just say for the sake of the conversation that it is allowed. Is it a good idea and are there any added benefits to getting more playing time in a less intense format?

In indoor soccer rec they allow unlimited ADP players but just two travel.

There were entire ADP teams playing all rec-member teams. It was ridiculous.

They used to have same rule as outdoor rec, but for some reason this winter they let unlimited ADP per team.

Sorry, yes, you are right. I was focusing on the Travel as the upper end of skill, not meaning to leave out ADP in what I was saying.

My kids play travel and do not play rec (they'd love to but no time!), but every friend I have in Arlington Rec hates having the two travel kids per team.

Not sure where you are getting your information. At U13 and above (and I think they just lowered it to U12), MSI Classic does allow a small number of players to be double-rostered to both an MSI classic team and travel team. There is no MSI Rec program once you hit age 13. Everybody is playing "Classic".

You can play MSI rec all through HS. Many kids do.

There are absolutely benefits for the double-rostered kid, for the reason you mentioned. And it can work out fine for the rec teammates and opposing teams if they are fairly competitive/ambitious. It's just not as fun for the opponent if they are not so serious, so I understand why MSI has the rule. You don't want young kids turned off of the sport after frustrating blowouts.

I have one very serious player who thrived in travel soccer but missed the relaxed rec experience with his school and neighborhood friends and wanted to do both. We live in Bethesda, but realized we could put a whole team in DC Stodert rec. Since the friend group had several good travel players, we asked to play in an older age group. It was an absolute blast, but almost all of the games were lopsided. We asked if we could have them play 2 years up to make it more even, but that was against the rules.

I'd love to see MSI rec get rid of the travel player ban for HS aged kids. If you are still playing rec at that age, you truly love the sport and in most cases are happy taking on teams of all levels. It's nice for kids to have the opportunity to spend time playing sports with friends before they leave for college.

I have a DC in the same situation and considered this as an option but afraid the rec games would conflict and couldnt commit to practices etc. He for sure needs more playing time and as it starts to get more competitive he rides the bench and only gets 5-10mins playing time. Granted this is u11 and I would sign him up for a different club.

My child is currently u10. We are looking at doing this next season. On a good day our son plays 10 minutes on the field because he is often in goal. We’ve seen his field skills and confidence deteriorate over this past year while the other players with more field time get better and better. We wish we had spoken up early on about so much time in the goal but our child enjoys it and plays exceptionally well there. We have done privates to work on foot skills but those privates aren’t a substitute for game play. We really think an extra game a week where he is playing at a lower level will instill some confidence. We were at a tournament today where more than one parent mentioned their child is doing this.

Please change teams. It wasn’t till my now 13 yo DS is getting plenty of playing time on his travel team and the leaps and bounds his development is taking that I realize how much I limited his development pursuing the highest team.
