Teachers—Anyone switch from ACPS to FCPS?

Anonymous
If so, would you share your experience?

I’m an elementary teacher with a M.Ed. in Curriculum & Instruction and Gifted Education. Over ten years with ACPS.

Why would anyone do that? Do you have any clue about FCPS compensation, OP? FCPS teachers FLOCK to surrounding counties to get OUT of this bureaucratic nightmare and non-competitive pay scale wasteland that is FCPS.

The board just approved the FY19 budget on Thursday. I’m getting a $5K bump in my salary for next year. That and not having to deal with the dysfunction of ACPS makes me want to stay in FCPS.

Anyone switch from APS to ACPS? Lots of district supervisors have, wondering if teachers have too.

You sound a little jealous to me.

Not OP but I’m seriously considering switching to FCPS to be on the same schedule as my children. It’s stressful finding care for snow days. Winter breaks don’t always match up either.

We are a 2 income household and DH is not a teacher so my pay cut would t affect us that much. The stress of childcare affects us a lot.

It could be worth it depending on the school. I was so much happier and less stressed teaching in FCPS. I moved to APS, and it has been tough. Perhaps it’s just the school.

This must be a sarcastic comment (or completely ignorant). FCPS teachers are the best paid in the region - by a substantial margin when benefits including pensions are included. And support of teachers in FCPS is generally reported to be very good in exit surveys.

You are badly mistaken.

NP here. It’s the PP that sounded a bit jealous of FCPS’s stature regionally.

They have the highest comp only when you consider the supplemental pension benefits. FCPS doesn’t do nearly as well on a take-home basis, which is why many teachers, especially those who are single and/or sole providers, leave for APS and other systems, because better retirement benefits in 30 years is only worth so much when you can barely make ends meet today.

+1

The teachers we know at APS (not ACPS) came from FCPS for the higher pay.
