New curriculum selection process delayed— new RFP must be issues now

Anonymous

Man it’s one thing after another...
Many high up folks seem to be fleeing MCPS too.

Dear Colleagues:

As you know, MCPS has engaged in a Request for Proposal (RFP) process to select new curricula for grades Kindergarten through Grade 8, for English Language Arts (ELA) and mathematics. As our curriculum review indicated, a new curriculum is needed to support teaching and learning.

Unfortunately, we will need to postpone this important process. We recently learned that two MCPS staff members, the associate superintendent in the Office of Curriculum and Instructional Programs and the supervisor for English/Language Arts in the Department of Secondary Curriculum and Districtwide Programs, are retiring and intend to accept job offers with Discovery Education, one of the vendors that submitted a proposal in response to the RFP. These staff members have recused themselves from any further involvement in the RFP process.

It is important to note that Discovery Education’s leadership acted proactively, diligently and collaboratively throughout this process. As soon as it was brought to the attention of Discovery Education’s leadership that these individuals were connected to the RFP process, the company, citing an abundance of caution, took the initiative and immediately withdrew from consideration.

While these job offers do not appear to have influenced the RFP process, we want to ensure public confidence in the integrity of this effort. Therefore, Superintendent of Schools Jack Smith is recommending that the Board of Education rescind the current RFP so that a new RFP can be issued at a later time.

We apologize for the disruption for our students and schools. We remain committed to acquiring a high quality curriculum, but it is critical that our teachers, students and families can have trust in the process.

Regards,

Who are these two people? Was Eric Lang one of them?

Wait, is this Erik Lang? Did he find a soft landing?

What a shitshow.
Just throw out discovery’s rfp and run with the other ones. BFD. Never heard of them and I work in private schools that RE-Eval all the time.

Enjoy your juicy MCPS pension while writing curricula for sale. Make sure you cite c2.0 on your resume! That was a real winner!

What new time frame? This needed to happen yesterday.

Later time. Nice.

How stupid are these people????

Good grief just let JHU select the new curriculum. Choose one of the many options in the public domain that has been through a University level evidence based peer review assessment and that is used by high ranking school systems in other states.

Why on earth is MCPS looking to buy anything from Discovery Education?? Why does everything in MCPDS need to be a corrupt shit show.

I'm the PP - one more point. Can you actually believe that one of the idiots who created the curriculum mess and sent the system down the drain is now trying to do it again and profit by doing it? I guess the old adage that scammer always try to hit their victims twice because they know they'll fall for it is true.

They should fire the MCPS admins and invalidate their retirement packages.

This is indeed Erick Lang

I thought Erick Lang was the super ofncurriculum not the assistant super if currciukum.

Either way no need to restart and delay this. What a disappointment.

So what, a couple of people of bloat won’t be involved in the selection now.

They have the parent, teacher and principal comments already.
Hopefully they have a shortlist of recommendations from JHU plus their own opinions since they don’t work in a silo and should know best practices in their industry.
If they already did a round of filling or two still fine just keep going.

And I really hope this wasn’t one of those dumpster dive RFP processes where they let anybody and everybody apply. I hope it was more limited rfp where they proactively reaches out to the top 10 and are making them compete.

Cant they just exclude that organization?

For real. Such ineptitude demonstrated over and over.

That would seem more expedient. It’s not as if Erick Lang doesn’t know the processes for vendor selection.

I think what they’re saying is that the two people who are leaving didn’t disclose their conflict of interest and were the ones choosing the other RFPs, so the whole operation potentially is tainted.
