We live on a corner and get a lot of dog traffic. At least once a week there is an bonus left somewhere on our property.
We have no pets - and 2 young children. Any advice on how to either identify the culprits - or stopping this? I was thinking of setting up a camera and catching someone - and emptying dirty diapers on their front lawn - but decided that was porbably not an effective way to go. Thanks for any tips. |
| can you put up a fence or a catchy garden sign? |
| sprinkler. |
| I've walked past houses that have cute signs up. Now, I don't know if they work but maybe they'll give some people pause. |
| I vote for a sign. Good luck. |

OP. I like your approach, myself. YOU didn't start the war! |

I take offense to you bearing the expense of a fence (thanks to Johnny Cochran). BUT you might want to, and landscape it just so.... Lights and cameras always work wonders. Might be jealous neighbors! |
| Not to hijack this thread but this is somewhat related: our cranky neighbor yelled at DH because he didn't pick up after our dogs who poop exclusively inside our own fenced yard. Fwiw, he usually does a clean up every couple days not an immediate pick-up. He was pretty pissed about being yelled at when it's our own yard. Were we out of line in not immediately picking up in our own yard? |
Your neighbor was out of line. Why does he care when you pick up your dog poop? How can he even see it (assuming your dogs poop in the grass)? |

I vote for a sign, too -- there are some cute ones here:

Any neighbor who interferes with what you are doing on your side of the fence has serious problems and deserves everything they get back. You have my permission. I can NOT stand nosy neighbors. I think it's this area. Are they THAT bored? |

OP - VERY LOUDLY catch them in the act! |

| My pet peeve is people who don't pick up after their dogs. We live in NW DC and frequently see people walking their dogs who CRAP ALL OVER THE PLACE and the keep walking. I usually call them out because I have 2 toddlers who love to play and pick up things on the sidewalk. Have you ever called these people out? They have no shame. I've been flipped the bird and called names by people because I say something. |

I have heard of motion-activated sprinklers. However, getting the dog owner wet is going to make it LESS likely they'll stay to pick up after the dog.
Are you sure it is a leashed dog? I was shocked to discover that there are people in our NW DC neighborhood who let their dogs wander around off leash and unattended. So there isn't anyone to pick up after them. I also worry about them getting hit by cars, etc. If you can catch the person walking away, shout out something like "do you need a bag? I have an abundance of bags and would be happy to get one for you!" Embarrass them and they won't do it again. Or follow them home and leave the filled bag on their doorstep with a kind note, "you left this on our property. Thought you might want it back." |
