Tips for getting neighbors to clean up after their dogs

Fwiw, he usually does a clean up every couple days not an immediate pick-up. He was pretty pissed about being yelled at when it's our own yard. Were we out of line in not immediately picking up in our own yard?

The neighbor was out of line to yell. And yes, you have the "right" to do whatever you want in your yard. However, if poo-stink is wafting over to your neighbor's yard, making it hard for him to enjoy HIS space, it would be kind of you to keep the place a little cleaner.

We once lived in a duplex with a girl who let her dog do its business in our front yard and didn't pick it up. We both (1) put the bag of poo on her steps several times and (2) started putting the bagged poo in her outside garbage can and neither approach was effective - although it was really cathartic!

As dog owners, once we were yelled at for letting our dog pee in someone's yard. "Are you gonna pick that up?!" Someone yelled at us. "Um, not sure how to pick up pee..." Anyhow, I like the cute sign idea - I think it might give people pause...

To the poster who was yelled at for allowing their dog to poop in their own yard -- I'd tell that neighbor to f**k off!

OP, do kids/teens walk dogs in your neighborhood? I have noticed that kids seem to be less diligent about picking up poop. I came home one day just as a dog was pooping in our yard and the kid walking it didn't even have a bag. He did ask for one which I got him but I assume if I hadn't happened to drive up he would have kept on going. I always pick up after my dog, and tell my kids they have to as well. Of course I can't guarantee that they do.

i have to say, i have a dog and i get really mad when i see dog poop left around the side walks. it gives us all a bad name. my husband and i will usually pick up other dog's poop when we see it. once when my dog wasn't feeling so well, we ran out of bags on our walk, and i went back after we got home to pick it up. no one wants to see poop. this is a problem at the dog park too. people go to socialize and then don't pay attention when their dog goes in to the bathroom right next to the swing set. we always make sure to watch our dog, because we enjoy going to the park alot and don't want it taken away.

we also have someone who likes to let their dog poop where we park our cars in the alleyway...right next to our garbage!!!! at least pick it up and put it in the garbage. i've already stepped in it once. i wish i could find out who it was.

OP, I havent read the other suggestions but do you belong to a HOA? Could they post a sign for you noting there is a fine for leaving dog poo. If not post a sign of your own. It may also be worth it to call the county. We had signs put up at our local park when the poo problem became out of control.

When I was in HS we had a neighbor that would let the dog poo on our lawn. My dad knew who it was and asked him to pick it up. The man told my dad he picked up all the dog poo once a week. My dad bagged it up and put it on his law, not in the bags....

Any neighbor who interferes with what you are doing on your side of the fence has serious problems and deserves everything they get back. You have my permission. I can NOT stand nosy neighbors. I think it's this area. Are they THAT bored?

You obviously don't live down-wind from people who let their dogs sh*t in their yard and take their time cleaning it up...

PP here.

Again, please hang out down-wind from someone whose yard has dog sh*t in it. Please. Then decided who needs to f*ck off.

As a dog owner who always picks up, I suggest the sign and a friendly sign at that. I have been yelled at by neighbors who just SEE me walking a dog - and yell at me not to let my dog pee or poop on their yard (my dog is NOT peeing or pooping by the way, they just see the dog and give a preventative yell - which basically just scares my dog). Let me tell you, nothing makes me want to let my dog do her business in the middle of their yard, more than being falsly accused. So if you take too aggressive of an approach, you may get the wrong result.

Now, as a dog owner (and mom), I do hate when other dog owners don't pick up - it makes us all look bad. From observing, it is usually the dog walkers people hire to walk the dogs.

I even try to get my dog past all the houses onto the trail before she does anything. But somedays, there is just no stopping her, so I aim her towards the utility strip. I figure few kids should be playing there.

Also, tall grass (or grass like plants) seem to call out to dogs. I'd go with flowers or short grass near the sidewalk if you are going to use landscaping to deter.

OP - Thanks for the thoughts so far. We do not live in a HOA - just DC so I don't think there is a realistic expectation of enforcing laws and issuing fines.

We are thinking of some landscaping - but are frustrated that this should be our expense. The thing that is really aggrevating is that living on a corner - inevitably the dog poop is on the grass between the street and sidewalk on the front side of the house where we always park - and not the side of the house where no one parks. Also, at least once a month we get dog poop in our yard. My 3 yo got it all over his baseball bat this weekend - like I needed to clean this up in addition to everything else on the to do list.

Do other people have these issues?

Someone in our neighborhood (with a beautiful front yard, I must say) has a little dog sign that says "not here please".

Most people in our neighborhood (thankfully) are pretty good about picking it up.

Last fall my husband was raking leaves and my daughter was playing in the yard and someone let their dog pee in a pile of leaves in our front yard. My husband (not trying to call them out, just spontaneously) said "I guess now we can't jump in those leaves...!" The person with the dog was really embarrassed, as they should be.

Yes, other people have these issues. I live in Georgetown and this is nearly a daily nuisance. The sidewalks and tree boxes are filled with poop. People here just don't care. Even the parks and playgrounds are disgusting.

Be careful with your landscaping. Dog pee kills young bushes and flowers.

OP, did you look at these? Thanks to the PP that posted this link, I almost choked on my lunch. My favorites are the R.I.P. sign that says "here lies the last dog that pooped" and the one with the dog toe-up that says "dead dogs don't poop" LOL!!

Besides the funny ones, I think a nice straitforward one would do the trick.

OP here - I used to live in GT. I agree that GT is worse than where we live now.

Question for dog owners - why would a sign make you clean up after your dog?

Better question for dog owners: why do you need to be told to clean up after your animals?

I know it's not an excuse, but it's possible that a lot of the offenses are occuring at night when it may be difficult to see the poop. If that is the case, you might want to invest in one of those light posts that you stick into the ground. They are not expensive and you can get the ones that are solar powered. I think an in-ground light right next to a please clean up after your dog sign would do the trick. If it doesn't, your neighbors suck.
