| "grass near the street" is exactly that. Why would you plant nice plants in an area where you know dogs are going to pee? that is just stupid. dogs on a leash are legal. you cannot control where they pee. nothing else we can do, so YOU have to deal. |
My neighborhood has no "grass near the street". We have row houses or apartment buildings with small gardens, then sidewalks, then tree boxes, then streets. This means we may have some grass on private property near the sidewalk, but none near the street. I thought that maybe if you were talking about neighborhoods without sidewalks, we might agree that in the general absence of pedestrians, few people passing in cars would notice a disposable zone of nastiness on the side of the road. People plant nice plants to beautify their neighborhoods. The difference from the pedestrian vantage point between pretty flowers and brown grass or bare earth is significant. It is irresponsible for dog owners to insist on an ugly, smelly dog toilet zone on either side of the sidewalk in a high-priced urban neighborhood. And yes, you are responsible for manipulating that leash to control where your animal stops to relieve himself. I don't know what the legal responsibilities are in DC, though I do know the police generally don't deal with "quality of life" issues. It is too bad, because PP's behavior is unethical if not actually illegal and punishable in a practical way. |

with the violent crime rate what it is in DC, this poster wants the police to chase around owners of peeing dogs? come on ....
male dogs mark their territory. that is what dogs do. I don't even like dogs that much, could care less about Michael Vick and dogfighting, but to get upset over dog pee is ludicrous. That is one of the many things that you have to deal with if you choose to live in an urban setting. Presumably the positives outweigh the negatives. Again, we are not talking about #2 (reasonable complaint certainly. no brainer you have to clean it up), but #1 |
| I suspect those of you arguing about #1 and the ridiculousness of complaining about it haven't had to smell it. I don't mean pee here and there. That IS a fact of life in the city, no doubt. I'm talking about a neighbor on our street who is too lazy to walk her dog and repeatedly makes the dog pee in the same tree box over and over. The stench is unbearable and there are flies all day long. Try living next to that while you're loading your kids into the stroller every morning and holding back the gag reflex. If you don't have what it takes to walk your dog and take care of it properly, don't own a dog. BTW, I'm writing this after seeing a huge pile of dog crap in my treebox this morning. Dog owners out there - why do you not care about your environs? Have some dignity already. |
The dog owners that do this just don't give a crap. I wish I knew a good way to get neighbors to clean up after their dogs. I've had my dog for almost a year now. I have cleaned up her poop every single time. It's a no brainer for me. Why would I want an area I walk in every day to be covered in dog crap? Then a few months ago we got a new neighbor with a St Bernard. All of a sudden giant piles of poop have appeared in the grassy area closest to our houses. It ticks me off because then I feel guilty walking my dog over there knowing the lady that lives on the end is probably pissed about the dog crap too. She yelled at me not to let the dog go in her yard last week which really ticked me off because I never have and I pick up EVERY time. I also don;t let my dog pee in the same spot every day because I know it ruins the grass. In all the time I've had her and walked her in the same areas there is no dead grass or spots from her peeing so I don't really worry about it. Sucky dog owners give us all a bad name. |
Would you as a dog owner, call out a sucky dog owner when you see bad behavior OR do you just go your own way? |
Of course I would. I don't want the poop in the grass for same reason non-dog owners don't. If I saw a dog crap and the owner not clean it up I would definitely offer a bag. The problem with my neighbor is I haven't seen it in action yet. It makes me so mad though. |

People really don't care. Let's face it. It indeed gives all dog owners a bad name. Have some pride and let's try not to act like we grew up in a barn. |
| This works and it is cheap and harmless to the dog. I love dogs but not interested in cleaning up anything that did not come from my dog. I buy huge cans of black pepper and sprinkle it all over the area the dogs poop in. The owners may wonder why their dog is sneezing, may even take them to the vet, so what, keep your dog off my property! Works like a charm, the dog sniffs before pooping, walks away. It is harmless! |
I've been told that cayenne pepper works even better. |
| you bend down to catch your dog's crap. what's the problem in carrying a bottle of water to rinse off the dog's pee? |
Will either of these hurt my lawn? If not, I'm doing it. |
I don't think they'll hurt your lawn. Most gardening centers sell pepper sprays that deter dogs - you can call and ask. I live in Georgetown where the dog shit is the worst around, and quite a few people use these sprays with some success. Just be thankful you don't live in Georgetown if you hate having your children step in dog shit. |
