Tuckahoe - Boundary after Nottingham becomes ATS/IB?

Anonymous
What is your best guess for the future Tuckahoe boundary after ATS/IB moves to Nottingham? Will the new Tuckahoe start off over capacity with Trailers?

  • Will it follow the recently decided middle school boundaries?

  • PUs from further up Lee Highway?

  • PUs from South of Lee and East of Sycamore?

What will drive the Tuckahoe boundary will first be filling McKinley, which will be very challenging after Reed opens. I looked at some of the numbers last night, and the only way it works is if McKinley takes all of the Tuckahoe planning units south of Lee Highway and the units on the other side of 66 as well. Tuckahoe will keep its current walkzone, but then the boundaries will move north to the planning units directly above it but primarily east into the current Nottingham zone, with the boundary between Tuckahoe and Discovery probably being units 17910, 17021 and 17033.

Oh, and as to the middle school boundary, that is part of what will drive the McKinley boundary north of Lee Highway, because McKinley will need to pick up everything south of Lee Highway right there that isn't walkable to Reed and then will need to pull as much of Tuckahoe from north of Lee Highway as it can reasonably justify to avoid creating a small pocket of McKinley that will go to Williamsburg while everyone else goes to Swanson. This will already make for some funky boundaries for McKinley to the south as it snakes between Reed and Ashlawn, but the less it take from the north the worse those will get, for both McKinley and Ashlawn.

Not if option goes to Carlin Springs. Then there will be a push north and Ashlawn will end up filling McKinley seats, to make room for Carlin Springs kids crossing 50. Read the analysis.

This. APS isn't ready to release proposed boundaries, and they won't until the fall, but they are already thinking about what those would look like. It's also part of what will be part of their decision-making for final recommendation on option schools. They are working really hard on this.

Parts of Tuckahoe, including part of AEFC and MM have expressed interest in the past in moving over to McK. If Carlin Springs also goes option, they could push units towards Ashlawn which could then push units towards McK.

Believe it or not, staff is working on this. It's complicated, and there are lots of puts and takes.

I have read the analysis. Even if that happens (and it's not a given), McKinley will still have a boundary problem unless you're going to create another ASFS-like situation at Ashlawn where a school sits outside of its attendance zone. Plus you have to consider how that will affect boundaries further east (hint, it will make them a mess because of Glebe).

If Nottingham becomes ATS, there will be zero excess capacity in North Arlington to allow this. The Ashlawn move can only happen if Barcroft and Carlin Springs both become option sites and ATS stays put, leaving excess capacity in North Arlington to be filled by former Carlin Springs families.

You all are worrying too much in advance. You need to see the proposed boundaries first. Keep calm.

We're not going to get to see the proposed boundaries until after the staff has chosen between the two scenarios laid out in the second analysis. If people want to know what the boundaries might look like so they can decide which plan they're going to support, it's reasonable for them to try to get a sense now of what the boundaries might look like under each scenario.

What happened to the "Moral Cohesion"? I thought everyone near EFC wanted to go to Tuckahoe. Now we see that was just a sham and they are trying to get into Reed / McK. Golf Clap for the Tuckahoe PTA - Bravo!

The Tuckahoe PTA board members all live in the walk zone right around Tuckahoe. They wanted to keep their walking distance school. The rest doesn't particularly concern them.

I crack up everytime I see a reference to McKinley boundaries crossing Lee Highway. I don't know which faction started that "fact", but it is preposterous.

McKinley's boundaries are going to be mess no matter what happens unless the do the Ashlawn across 50 thing and McKinley picks up most of the existing Ashlawn zone (and even then they won't be pretty). But taking those units from Tuckahoe would make the boundaries far more compact than the alternative.
