Two parents told me that their second graders got in the pool with the highest score below 130 benchmark. Is it possible? |
I don't believe that. |
I suppose anything is possible, but it is highly, highly doubtful. They probably referred and there is absolutely nothing wrong with doing that. |
referrals are for those who didn't take the test, not for those who scored less than 130 and didn't get into the pool. No? |
No, anyone can refer their child, even one who took the tests and did not make the cutoff. Those who tested in are "automically in the pool". But you can also refer into the pool. |
We used GMU. The tested seemed very good and our child liked her, which is very important. I'm told that FCPS prefers GMU because they give all of the subtests, which gives them a better idea about the child. I think they also perceive them to be non-biased. I would imagine IF there are private testers that give consistently high test scores, FCPS knows who they are and looks at the scores with a critical eye. |
Your child is in the pool with one score/subtest score of 130 or more (benchmark supposedly changes each year, but it seems to be at 130). Parents can also refer a child. Both students in the pool and students that were referred going through the same screening process. http://www.fcps.edu/DIS/gt/faqs.html If my child is not in the 2nd grade pool, can he/she still be considered for center placement? The second grade pool is a starting point. It is a means to identify a group of second grade candidates for the full-time AAP (level IV) center program. It does not have a limiting effect because any parent/guardian, teacher, and/or administrator may refer a child and many do. Students who are referred receive the same consideration as students who are in the pool. All files are screened at the same time by the Central Selection Committees that meet in March/April. The AAP (Level IV) Referral Form is located in the Parent Information Packet for Screening, Testing, and Identification which is available at your local school or on line at the Advanced Academic Programs website www.fcps.edu/DIS/gt/forms.html. |
My 2d grade DD got in the pool with NNAT - 139, Cogat - 127, GBRS - 16.
We are still thinking if to take WISC. Does it make sense? |
No one can say definitely if that is enough to get in, I have heard of some getting in with lower scores and some getting rejected with higher scores. But in my opinion...and that is all it is, That profile looks pretty good to me. The 16GBRS and test scores to support the GBRS are very good. I would think a student with this profile would be accepted. |
Ditto - that looks very good to me. Why not wait and see? If she gets rejected she can always quickly take the WISC then - it will possibly save you $375.

Your child is most probably in. The pool kids that do not get in usually have low gbrs. You maxed out the gbrs. |
No. Any single test above 130 gets you in the pool. Referrals are for everyone else. And I know a child that was in the pool because the scored well on one sub test, but the rest were low, below 100. That is a weaker testing profile that 125 on all tests. |
Any idea when the eligibility decisions will be mailed? |
