Funny that ironically you are the one that seems butthurt. Lots of people get rejected, you will recover. Life goes on. |
Yeah, they’re called “rich kids.” Anyone who has the ability to pay all their bills AND save money for retirement AND save money for college is rich. |
I used to teach 6th grade and know what happened wrt college/education outcomes/general success in life for many of my former students and I strongly disagree with that. |
And the more kids who take AP, the more $$ |
Maybe, But not solely on the basis of testing they did in 6th grade. |
As a former AP teacher (but not the PP), schools often apply pressure on teachers to give inflated grades/keep the parents happy and make the school look better. Teachers are often very strongly encouraged to give students good grades even if unearned and even if it dumbs down the class for everyone. |
I did all that on less than $200k HHI and while it’s a good income it’s by no means rich let alone “DCUM rich”. |
What was most disappointing is watching kids similarly situated to your kids getting into t10 and yours not....can't help to wonder what went wrong and feel that your kid didn't get what they deserved. We all know how kids compare |
The "smart kids" at our school are going to UMCP, Vanderbilt, Michigan, Chicago, MIT, Yale. The smartest of the bunch is going to UMCP because the school excels in something that the other schools don't. They are all in high spirits. One kid we all expected to go to a t10 is going to UMBC. He says he lost steam in 11th grade and hopes to transfer after getting away from chaos at home. I think I'm more impressed with his grit than I am with any of the others. |
The disappointment is natural, but don’t feed it! None of us are going to get everything we try/aim for in life. Talk up the options they do have, buy the swag, and be excited for their future opportunities. |
Agree! I have a kid with LDs and due to late identification coming from a gaslighting public school district, she could barely read in 6th grade. She is in a T25 now. With that poster’s ideology, she would have gone to trade school or worked as a checker at Safeway, She is not the only one. I’ve seen other kids blossom as they mature. |
Why do you feel your kid “deserved” it? |
There are thousands of amazing kids who are turned away from the T-10’s (and T-50’s!). It is what it is- take what you can enjoy from the process and celebrate your kid’s options. |
There’s a lot of criticism about the quality of the academics at Vanderbilt. I’d dig into that more. Check out r/Vanderbilt for recent student takes. |
I’m not an admissions counselor but a HS teacher. If you really want your kid to stand out, tell them to find a part time job, stay at it and get someone there to write an additional recommendation. So many of my students are “founding companies” or starting clubs. They are all going away to fancy summer programs or internships or CITs (which means their parents have $$$$ to pay for these or connections). They all write down thousands of volunteer hours that no one verifies. Get a job, show work ethic and real life collaboration and that they can work with people. Then they will stand out. |
