This just reads as rich/bored American to me. Not specific to suburban white women though if course some fit the bill. But it most reminded of a 20-something male lawyer I worked with who traveled a a TON but seemed generally disinterested in experiencing anything too foreign or unique. |
The USA committed genocide against Native Americans. |
Freaking Atlantic City NJ is the top place that comes to mind. Hated everything about it. Everything. |
I'd like to visit but not passionate about the idea. More tepid because of the long trip. I would expect the xenophobia and patriarchal culture and would do some research on that (same way I pay attention to the Turkey and Egypt threads but no plans to go soon). |
New Orleans. I didn't hate it ,but I didn't like it either. |
LOL enjoy the failed country of Pakistan. |
I mean, comparing all of Madrid to Midtown Manhattan really suggets you went nowhere. The Retiro? Chueca? The Prado? |
Amazed that Madrid doesn’t have modern art. I guess I must have imagined the Guernica. |
Sorry, my friend, you are the ignorant one. I'm the one who donates 75k/yr to charity. Do you? Doubt it. I'm the one who donates my time to serving the poor. Do you? I doubt it. Now, when I want a break from everything I do, you think I'm ignorant and don't want to be reminded that poor people exist? I spend more time and money serving the poor than most people and some of us need a break - in luxury. I've earned it and I can afford it. You also sound jealous. PS I love vacationing in Switzerland and Hawaii. |
+1 It's so disgusting and dirty. Plus there are so many homeless people that I actually feel unsafe at times. |
I’m not crazy about the idea of visiting Serbia—that genocide still seems to close to me. It’s like looking at anyone over the age of 50 and wondering what they were doing in the 90s. I’ve never been to Germany and I think I’m just about at the point where I’d not feel weird about it. |
I feel like I've been to a different city? Madrid has gorgeous architecture, amazing museums, great food, and it's nothing like Manhattan! It has an old, sophisticated vibe to it, and felt so safe. San Francisco felt very safe to me aside from Union Square area, and random sightings of extreme poverty and despair. |
I've had maybe two vacations in my entire life that I thought were worth the hassle and expense. As I get older, vacation to me is a state of mind and less going. |
I also love Turkey. But the US has never made reparations for slavery so its not like we can throw stones. We still literally have reservations when Native Americans live in poverty. Who are we to judge? |
The difference is that the current human rights situation in Turkey is still very poor and gets worse. No freedom of expression, opponents of the regime and journalists end up in prison, LGBTI* and refugee rights are systematically violated. |
