Typically things like shoulder or Arnold press, triceps pushback, bicep curls, etc. will build muscle. Also need to lose body fat.

Lose weight. What ever is leftover, you will have to live with.
It's part of aging.

Check out Essentrics. I'm doing amazing arm exercises in my Sat classes every week. And almost everyday on my own.

OP - with what you're describing your issue is first and foremost, losing fat. With a "thick middle" I wonder if your insulin levels need to be checked. Many people who carry weight in their middle (apple shaped) are at higher risk of diabetes. You would probably be most successful on a super-clean, low carb diet - most especially refined carbs like rice, bread and pasta. Just don't go there, at all!

You need to really crank up the cardio. minimum 3 days per week of at least 45 mins of serious cardio. If you don't have a fitness tracker consider getting one. I have one that tracks my steps/miles - it's super simple, and it's highly motivational for me. goal is to hit at least 10K steps per day - minimum.

You should also do planks (work up to being able to do a full minute in plank position) and push ups (try to do 3 sets of 10, work up from there or until you literally feel like your arms are going to fall off). Both are excellent compound, whole body exercises... if done correctly, and really work your core (back and abs), along with your biceps, triceps, shoulders and chest.

You need to be consistent, stick with it. don't get discouraged. Good luck!

I agree with PP above that eating clean and cutting refined is good. But don’t pair that with lots of cardio. It’ll backfire because it’ll make you super hungry. I found success with weight loss around my middle by revamping my diet and just doing barre/walking for ‘cardio’ maybe three times a week. Nothing he’s or strenuous. It’s a more balanced approach. Exercise is important but it can be low intensity. Your body shape and weight is all diet for the most part. You can improve tone with weights.

Same here. I am a 37 yo apple shape. All my fat seems to go to mid section and upper arms. Targeted exercise and cardio is not necessarily bad but the key is that you need to lose weight and for me abs and cardio didn't work that well:
- paying a lot of attention to my diet is what worked first. As PP above said, cardio can make you hungry. I started by a very clean full of veggies paleo /primal type of diet. Getting rid of fast carbs helped a lot with the bloating
- with that I did mostly Pilates and barre to accompany the weight lost. Dual advantage : making sure I wouldn't lose all muscles while losing weight+ not too strenuous so I wouldn't be ravenous and add to the carb flu/carb detox difficulties
- after 2-3 months of that I had lost the first 6-8 pounds i needed to feel better
- then I started adding cardio and more weight training targeting the upper arms. That's when the more strenuous exercise regimen was most efficient because :1/ I wasn't hungry; 2/ I could see the muscles right away because I had lost enough weight. It was very motivating..

Now on maintenance I eat high GI carbs every 3 days at most (don't care for them anyway, just don't want to be anti social), and I have a nice balance of Pilates/weights and very gentle cardio

For arms, I LOVE the Tracy Anderson Mat Workout segment for arms. (I don't really like the rest of the video, but the arms section is amazing.)

I did it every morning in the months leading up to my wedding and my arms were much slimmer and more toned.

I bet you can find it on YouTube. Do the one without weights most often, but then do with one with weights (3-5 lbs) a few times a week.

It's only a few minutes long, so you can do it every morning while you're waiting for your coffee to brew.

Do you have a gym? I finally got very toned arms from alternating rowing machine and Octane (bike with on board arm exercises).

You need to do HIIT to burn the fat and lift weights to build muscle on your arms and fill out the flabbiness.
