"obese" and struggling with diet

Anonymous
I'm 29 and have about 70 lbs to lose to be in a healthy range. I'm mad at myself for getting to this point but nothing I can do about that now. I've lost 30 lbs since mid-January by cutting out soda, sugar and pretty much most carbs. I do still have a cheat day about 2-3 times a month but that's it. Generally, I eat chicken or ground turkey for meats and then just tons of veggies (green beans, broccoli, sweet potato, etc.). I snack on nuts (cashews or almonds), cheese sticks or plain rice cakes with natural PB. Occasionally I'll have a "think thin" bar if I need extra protein in a certain day. I limit my carbs to no more then 40g a day. While I'm happy that I've lost 30 lbs in the last 2 months, I'm not really "satisfied" with that. I watch the show "my 600 lb life" and see these people losing 60+ lbs in one month. Granted I'm not 600+ lbs but still.I just feel like I should be losing a lot more then I am and it's getting frustrated. On top of the diet change, I also walk 2-2.5 miles 4-5 days a week. I started off at 1 mile (literally all I could do without feeling like I was dying) and now I do 2- 2 1/2 without any issues.

My husband and I are TTC and have been for over a year and a half now. I have PCOS and hypothyroidism so that hasn't helped on top of my weight (clearly). We finally met with an RE in January who gave me provera to induce a period and then ran a bunch of tests. Pretty much everything came back completely fine. All of my levels are normal/where they should be, A1C was a 6.4, TSH was 2.5, etc. She wants me to lose 40-50 lbs before we move foward with Famara/timed intercourse and all that. Since that appt with her, I've dropped 30 lbs so far and have a follow up with her for the second week of April in which I hope to be down another 10 lbs by then to at least be at the 40 lb lost mark but I'd really like to be closer to 50. The TTC stuff has been hard for me knowing that it's "my fault" (hubbys semen analysis came back EXTREMELY good- all levels are on the higher end of average so he was thrilled). Over the last week, I've really taken a turn for the worst with my diet. I'm barely allowing myself 600 calories a day and have gotten to the point where I'm barely hungry and am just eating to get something in me. Today for example I had a think thin bar at 2:00pm (120 calories) and then around 6:00pm I had a piece of grilled chicken with about 5 pieces of broccoli and that was it for the day. I'm also OBSESSED with the scale and will literally weigh myself 10+ times a day. I'll weigh myself 3-4 times in a row in the morning and then randomly throughout the day and again at night before going to bed. When I wake up in the morning, it's the first thing I think of to do. I'm worried that I'm on a downward slope here as I'm now just obsessed with dropping weight and losing as much as I can a week.

I guess my biggest question is- how bad is it for me to be eatting less then 1,000 calories a day? I know on those shows, they have them eat no more then 1200 calories a day and they lose weight SO FAST. I know eventaully my body is going to stall out and go into starvation mode if I keep this up but I'm just to the point of not even being able to force myself to eat more then 600ish calories a day now. Any advice would be great and PLEASE, no bashing.

I wouldn’t worry too much that you haven’t been eating much. As you say - it has only been the last week that you have been eating so little. I find when I am stressed (which it sounds like you are), I eat very little.

One thing to keep in mind - as someone who is 70lbs overweight, the amount of food you need to maintain that weight is far more than someone of normal weight. You will need to get used to eating very little in comparison to what you are used to.

If you stay at 1,000 for longer periods you are setting up for binges.

You could be eating so much better than you are and losing faster too. Your diet is not well balanced or set up for weight loss even. How about joining Weight Watchers and learning something about nutrition?

People on 600 pound life have had weight loss surgery -- of course they are losing weight at a fast rate.

Every word of this made me cringe at how wrong it is. People, CARBS ARE NOT A NECESSARY PART OF A HEALTHY DIET. Stop mindlessly repeating the sugar lobby propaganda and update your knowledge of nutrition to the 21st century. If you’re too lazy to do that then please at least keep your ignorant mouth shut.

Before you ask, I don’t even do keto as I’ve always been at a healthy weight. It just makes me cringe so hard to see people who haven’t read a health article since the 80s repeat these debunked myths as if they’re some kind of good advice.

Sorry I touched some sort of nerve.

In 1989 I weighed 277 pounds. I now weigh 124, thanks to WW. I have no idea what your sugar lobby rant means.

OP, I’d encourage you to meet with a therapist and a nutritionist. There is a lot here that suggests that you need some professional help.

A very gentle +1 to this. Please seek professional help with a mental health provider. One cannot be healthy and continue eating just a bar, some broccoli and a piece of chicken.

+1 You have so much going on in your life, OP. I am concerned about your simultaneous focus on restriction and the blame you are shouldering for your problems conceiving. That must be so hard to process. I will speak from some experience that healthy SUSTAINABLE weight loss is slow going because you are learning how to make lifestyle choices that will prevent you from putting the weight back on. Weight loss isn’t usually the hardest part of that process. I found that I need to learn how to enjoy food in moderation and without guilt as well as develop tools for self care that don’t center around food. These are my keys to long term success and maintenance. I used to think that I would lose weight and fix the problem but I didn’t really fix anything until I dealt with the mental. That also meant I had to forgive myself for letting myself go and be kind to myself about my weight.

I think a therapist and a nutritionist are excellent suggestions. You are 29, OP! You have time to lose the weight in a healthy way and still have a family. It is good for you to tackle this problem now, before you have a family. Life gets harder with a baby and food is a tempting way to self-soothe. Better to do the work of addressing this problem now. Hugs to you, OP!

Simple anwser-600 calories for a few weeks is fine, 40 gm of carbs is fine , you could even go down to 20 or 30 and up protien to 60-80 for a while, seek out a protien drink made with 100 whey protien, stick to walking just a 1 mole a day at a moderate pace, the weight will continue to come off but you are right, you won't drop as quickly as the person who weighs 600 lbs

Not bad at all. You are obese. Your body is using stored energy-fat, which is exactly what it is designed to do. You stored up that energy, nothing wrong with your body using it.

Only thing I think is really bad is the multiple times a day of weighing. Weigh once a day, in the morning.
