Judge my list

At the suggestion of one commenter on the swami thread who didn't want to distract from swami responses, I'm posting my list on a separate thread for general comment and predictions.

PK3

1. DC Bilingual
2. Capital City
3. Shepherd
4. Creative Minds
5. Breakthrough
6. Takoma (in bound)

Takoma is guaranteed for in bound this year and we would be happy if that is where we end up, so didn't use the full 12 spaces.

I'd guess you'll get in to Cap City or Breakthrough. But good for you having 6 good options! Hope you enjoy wherever you end up.

For sure you’ll get into Breakthrough. There are two classes staying at Taylor for the next couple of years.

I'd guess you'll be at Takoma, but I'm a lottery pessimist. Or realist? It really has gotten less likely to get in in the past few years. Not sure why the PPs are so sure you'll get into Cap City or Breakthrough.

Nobody's sure. People are just guessing. Cap City+Breakthrough offered 77 PK3 spots and waitlisted 317...with some folks probably waitlisted at both schools, so maybe 77 got a spot and 250 didn't, and maybe some put themselves on the list after the lottery. So applicants probably have a ~40% chance of getting into one of those, and I'm a lottery optimist.

The odds were worse at DCB, CMI, and Shepherd (where you have IB to contend with instead of just sibs).

Add Sela. It is well-loved and offers better chances

Cap City may also have more siblings than a school like Breakthrough because it goes all the way through high school.

Don’t forget staff preference.

Larger schools - like Cap City - also have more teachers who are eligible for this. Can’t exceed 10% of enrollment but it is a factor in some years.

Choices already are locked in....

I don't think Sela is better than Takoma unless you want Hebrew.

It's interesting that OP put Cap City and DCB ahead of Shepherd. I'd say Shepherd has more tested, reliable feeders (Deal/Wilson). Unless she really wants language--then I'd say DCB, Shepherd, and Cap City, in that order.

Hi, OP here. Thanks for all the feedback. I know its basically a moot point since lottery entries are closed, but we were definitely debating the order of the first 3, and they all seemed so unlikely that we just kind of ended up with that ranking. Not the best strategy, I know!

As for Sela, we did visit there, but it was hard to gauge whether it was worth giving up the advantages of a neighborhood school (walking to drop off and pick up seem worth a lot!). How did others make this decision of comparing charters that don't really offer a path to a solid middle or high school, versus their in bound school that also seems ok, particularly for early years?

I think Shepherd is a little more traditional than Cap City in certain ways, and some families might like one more than the other. Whether Shepherd will feed Wilson in 2030 when OP's child enters 9th grade, or whether OP will still live in DC and want her kid to go there, is also not certain.

For whatever it's worth, Sela officials said they were in talks with DCI. Not sure if that will pan out or not, but it's definitely something they are working on.

I bet you dci will open another campus just to deal with the overflow from stokes 2 and Mundo 2.

Adding sela will definitely add to this.

I suspect lamb will have to open a second campus to pay for their lawsuits.
