"Pulling Out" vs. Condoms

Anonymous
This topic came up at a recent moms night out. My friends were shocked to find out that DH and I use condoms as our method of birth control (we are not done with kids, just not ready for #2 yet.) They all agreed that condoms were "disgusting" and there was no way they they or their husbands would agree to use them. So I asked, "what do you do instead?" and I was shocked to find out that they all use "pulling out" as their method of birth control. To which I replied, "And you think condoms are disgusting?!?! At least it is contained!!" Not to mention that I would not feel protected from getting pregnant if my husband pulled out...

Does everyone feel this way about condoms but me? I mean DH doesn't love them, but he knows its the only way he's getting any right now...

On the pill, so we don't use condoms, but I am with you 100%. Pulling out is absolutely not a reliable birth control method by any measure.

Oh, and condoms aren't disgusting. Are your friends 15? Good grief...

TOTALLY with you. Can you say sticky mess?!?! DH doesn't like condoms, but he doesn't like celibacy either, kwim!? (other options wouldn't make sense for us right now)

We use condoms. Are your friends all 15 years old?

BTW, I'm the one who posted last spring about passing out during my IUD fitting...I never tried again.

We use condoms, too. Pulling out is ridiculous.

"Pulling out" is how many women get pregnant.

Pulling out has worked for us for about 10 years (knock wood) except for the month we decided to get pregnant. I personally would prefer condoms, though, and certainly don't think they're disgusting (???) but, um, they don't really work in our case.

Can I ask why not? Is it a size issue? (ok, maybe I'M the one here who's 15)

condoms seem a little college-y or like you're dating. Pulling out has been too effective for me bc I want another and DH doesn't.

We used condoms for the year or so between DD #1 and #2. I'm now have a Mirena though. I certainly would not be using the "pulling out" method.

Your friends are idiots! Or they want to get pregnant. This is Sex Ed 101 -- pulling out doesn't work as birth control!!

I had to go off the pill, so DH and I used a combo of pulling out and timing. We would use condoms during the middle of my cycle. Seemed to work fine........until I got PREGNANT!!!

While "pulling out" seems a little high-school-y...

There's some new info that pulling out isn't that much less effective than condoms in typical use. http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2009/05/28/health/main5045514.shtml

That said, I'd go with 12% failure rate over 17% failure rate. DH and I used condoms for years with no problem.
