"Pulling Out" vs. Condoms

Here's a birth control effectiveness chart from Planned Parenthood:

http://www.plannedparenthood.org/health-topics/birth-control/birth-control-effectiveness-chart-22710.htm

In another part of the website they say withdrawal results in 4 pregnancies out of 100 times if done properly. So I guess withdrawal isn't so bad if you are very self-controlled.

It has been studied time and time again and if the man is consistently pulling out before ejaculation, then the failure rate of the withdrawal method is not significantly different than the failure rate of condoms.

For the record, I have been using the withdrawal method with my man for 10 years without a single pregnancy. It works just fine.

Please don't put people down for not knowing something. Now they know, you have schooled them with your experiment of 1 person's experience over a 0 year period. Strong scientific data like that cannot be ignored.

i thought everyone used birth control!

I don't have any friends on the pill anymore, but I do know some who use the patch. Most use condoms.

15:37 again...meant to add that the few friends I've discussed it with don't think they have sex often enough to make it worth it to use the pill.

I can't use hormonal birth control anymore. I hate condoms as does my husband. We use the withdrawl method and have for 7 years with no problems and no surprises. Of course it probably helps our "success" rate that we don't have sex all that often

We used the pulling out method for years without problems...until I found myself very unexpectedly pregnant. Seriously.

OP here. Was on the pill for 6 years pre-kids. By the time I quit BF'ing #1 (at 18 months) it hardly seemed worth going back on the pill b/c we'll probably start trying for #2 when our DD turns 2.

Sure it happens. But for that matter the pill isn't perfect either.

I'm surprised that anyone under the age of 50 managed to escape the sex ed class where they explained to you why pulling out doesn't work. Also surprised that anyone over 18 would be so reckless.

I used condoms for a while after having problems on the pill. Then got a tubal ligation. Best choice ever. DH and I don't need any "equipment" (other than his) and I don't have to fill prescriptions and take artificial hormones. And for a little while I got that naughty unprotected sex feeling that I had when I was trying to get pregnant.

Bahahaha! Yes, thanks Virginia Masters, for helping us see the error of our ways. Pre-ejaculate indeed does no longer contain sperm, as you and your husband have definitively proved.

My 4 yo daughter is living proof that "pulling out" does not work. BTW, up till the day that my doctor confirmed my pregnancy my then fiance insisted that he had not ejaculated before pulling out.

We use condoms and have been doing so for over 2 years now with no plans to have another. Maybe my DH is a freak but he likes them and says they make him last longer. That fact, combined with the no-mess, makes them a-ok with me!

That said, I'd go with 12% failure rate over 17% failure rate. DH and I used condoms for years with no problem.

That condom failure rate is so high because condoms are often used incorrectly.

I'm a guy and have pulled out thousands of time. no chance I ever did not pull out in time. Key thing is to make it part of your sex life - where you finish can be fun.

Moron, do you have a comprehension problem? A woman can get pregnant without you ejaculating. Your pre-come -- the little drops of semen that come out of your penis long before you ejaculate -- contains enough sperm to cause a pregnancy.
