People who interrupt

Anonymous
Please grant me the patience to deal with someone who won't let me finish a thought. Or advice.

MIL constantly interrupts. It's their first time at out new home and I said "for the patio I'm going to get..." and she chimes in "a bird feeder, some flower pots, a fire pit, you need landscaping, do you have a lawnmower? And then I finish "chairs. I need chairs." This is every conversation, whether small talk, or if I'm answering her question, or if I'm telling her about the kids. It's exhausting. Dh interjects and says "let her talk", but I just don't even want to talk anymore.

She's not worth talking to, and I know that's an awful thing to say. I feel like I'm being standoffish because I limit my participation, but I just can't deal with her.

Why can't you just talk to her about it?

For the patio, I'm going to get...

--a bird...

Excuse me. I wasn't finished. Please let me finish my own sentences.

Repeat as necessary. Yes, the first few visits, you'll have to do this 20 times in 10 minutes, but after some visits, she'll learn. As someone who came from an ethnic family that has 8 conversations going at any time and everyone is interrupting and talking over each other, she can learn. My siblings and I have all had to learn this and she can too.

Ugh I interrupt and I hate it. I'm just really enthusiastic, my mind goes at the speed of light and some people speak sooooo slowly, or say a thought in a long convoluted sentence that could be more concise, or ramble, or repeat themselves...but I am sorry, aware and trying.

You are not smarter than others, or more interesting. You are rude. That’s it.

Some people need interrupting--there is someone I work with who will just ramble ON AND ON at a meeting if someone doesn't interrupt. But I don't think you're talking about that.

Another one. I’m trying, too. I always have a million questions, though and am genuinely interested. Also, some of you ramble on incessantly and can tell a story to save your life.

Can’t tell a story to save your life.

Op here. I have been trying to tell her for 10 years. So has dh. She has a lot of quirks and none are fixable. Gentle reminders, heart to hearts, getting snippy...Nothing has worked. And I've reached the point where I give up. I will give my one word answers, and excuse myself from conversations when possible. But I. Just. Cant.

Is it just you that she interrupts, or everyone? I think it's a different situation if she's interrupting you but not DH than if that's just what she does with everyone.

Everyone. But I'm quieter than DH and the ILs, so I feel more trampled on.

I'm also an interrupter. I just seem to be a bad judge of when people are done speaking and try really hard to be mindful of it.

This is also me.
