| Is this no longer any option for us if we live in J-H district in Alexandria? Our DC is still a year away from preK but was curious how the transfer works and if we'd be eligible and how likely it is to actually happen. How do they choose transfers? Transportation would not be an issue for us. Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks! |

No transfers out of JH will be granted, unless you have major political swing. A school board member could push it for you - they admin-transfer their own kids without getting on line.
|
| Why are you guys tolerating this? |
| no, not an option. |
|
The above response are 100% false. My next door neighbor got an admin transfer out of JH and into Maury this year. And another neighbor got a programmatic transfer out of JH and into MVCS this year. Both kids are in 1st grade.
We live in the new developments near the bridge, fwiw. |

Your next-door neighbor must have exceptional circumstances concerning health and safety. One cannot request a transfer out of J-H just because it is a low-ranked school. Kids can opt into a dual-language school, if space is available. |
What would be your reason? Simply because you don't like the school or its demographics won't be good enough. |
| You missed the boat OP! You now pay a higher mortgage AND don't get an under the table admin transfer. FYI, it's also racist to even ask ACPS for the transfer, as they will tell you. |
If this is true, then your next door neighbor must have had a legitimate reason for the transfer (e.g., goes to Grandma's house for afterschool care and grandma lives next door to Maury). What they are not doing any more is letting people transfer out of JH who have no legitimate reason to need to be near or in another school. My son is a third grader at Maury and at least 15-20 percent of his class is admin transfers from JH, but they are not letting people do that now - if you look at the classes below his, there is nowhere near that percent of admin transfers. |
Nope. PP, you are discussing two different types of transfer. A program transfer into MVCS is based on (1) eligibility for the receiving program (which, at MV, is dual-language only), and (2) available spaces. See policy JCE-R. An "admin" transfer into Maury is exclusively for health & safety, victim of crime, or school board employee reasons, or for reasons of sibling placement. There -ARE- no other "admin" transfers. Sorry, PP. See https://www.acps.k12.va.us/site/Default.aspx?PageID=431 The only exceptions are made for school board members transferring their own children. |

All my friends who had transferred from JH into Maury were told their kids would have to go in district fall 2018 and be back at JH. No one would be grandfathered in, no siblings preferences, nothing.
Maury is packed. There is no room even for in district kids. And trailers are not an option for that particular school. I believe the only transfer out of JH would be for dual language immersion, like to MVCS. no one out of district will be getting into Maury starting this fall. |
Tolerating what? Having to go to the school the house they chose to buy is zoned for? That's life. You can't just demand to be let into the schools other people pay hundreds of thousands of more dollars to live in. Is no secret JH isn't desirable. People who buy there are well aware and buy there anyway. That's not tolerating anything, that's living the choice you made. |
Uhh, Maury is NOT packed. In fact, there's only three 3rd grade classes. |
| Why do you want to transfer |
