This is a punch on the stomach of many DMV residents, who are always trying to get more and more. Life is so much more than a Mercedes and a 10-million dollars home.

Did you read the average salary is already $400k plus?
Wife of a surgeon here. My husband's pharmaceutical implant rep makes more than him. The problem with the US system is insurance and pharmacy costs moreso than physicians. |
|
Isn't it amazing how quickly doctor's wives (always a DW) show up on these posts crying about how underpaid they are?
I think this is just emblematic of the greedy attitude around here. |
A surgeon saved my mom's life by managing somehow to silly putty and duct tape her heart back together after discovering that she had a hidden defect that was causing her aorta to slowly disintigrate and fall apart. A surgeon gave us two exfra years with our mom. Surgeons deserve to make whatever they do, and then some. |
It’s almost always the wife answering for her husband on this board... |
Because the husband's work 60-80 hours weeks! It's not the easiest profession to be married to. Guess how many times they cancel surgery to stay home with a sick kid? It doesn't go over well. |
I think most people don't have an accurate assumption about how much doctors really make. Sure there are some super successful specialized surgeons, but I think most people grossly overestimate. To make bank, you need to ho to a rural underserved area. DMV in general does not pay well because you have many choices and it drives insurance payouts down. |
Yeah, give me some numbers. My family has a lot of doctors, some in urban areas. They're doing outstanding, and that's fine. But why do they consistently complain about the pay of administrators, pharma representatives, PAs, nurse practitioners, etc? Physician, heal thyself. |
The way to "heal thyself" is to stop taking insurance and move to a concierge practice. It's going to be better for the physician but not the patient IMO. Only the wealthy will have access to the top specialists. |
You vote with your feet OP. Supply and demand. Don't go see the surgeon if you think they cost too much. Simple. If you are so offended that it's like a "punch on the stomach", I definitely encourage you to stand your ground. Canadians also have the longest wait time to see physicians. |
Are they living in 10 million dollar homes like OP says? |
A couple of them have assets in excess of 10 million, yeah. |
I bet if pressed there is more to it. They are either old, crazy successful or have money from other sources. This is not typical of the DMV area. Google the average surgeon salary in DC and it simply doesn't support these figures. We are late 30s and know many specialists. They live in 800,000ish homes and drive newer but common cars. OP is being dramatic. |
No, not in the DMV. I am not OP. Go ahead, press. They made a ton of money, saved and invested wisely, and now have a gigantic sum of money. Nor did they come from wealth. More power to people who make good money. But sometimes it is too much. |
Then why are you replying to a thread about the DMV? Doctors in flyover and rural areas make a lot more money than here. |
