I think this is just emblematic of the greedy attitude around here.

I think most people don't have an accurate assumption about how much doctors really make. Sure there are some super successful specialized surgeons, but I think most people grossly overestimate. To make bank, you need to ho to a rural underserved area. DMV in general does not pay well because you have many choices and it drives insurance payouts down.

Yeah, give me some numbers. My family has a lot of doctors, some in urban areas. They're doing outstanding, and that's fine. But why do they consistently complain about the pay of administrators, pharma representatives, PAs, nurse practitioners, etc? Physician, heal thyself.

Are they living in 10 million dollar homes like OP says?

A couple of them have assets in excess of 10 million, yeah.

I bet if pressed there is more to it. They are either old, crazy successful or have money from other sources. This is not typical of the DMV area. Google the average surgeon salary in DC and it simply doesn't support these figures. We are late 30s and know many specialists. They live in 800,000ish homes and drive newer but common cars. OP is being dramatic.

No, not in the DMV. I am not OP. Go ahead, press. They made a ton of money, saved and invested wisely, and now have a gigantic sum of money. Nor did they come from wealth. More power to people who make good money. But sometimes it is too much.

Then why are you replying to a thread about the DMV? Doctors in flyover and rural areas make a lot more money than here.

Are you sure about this? Your reasoning is that doctors in urban areas make less. My cousin and her husband are doctors in NYC and they make a ton of money.

Our personal experience has been job offers for $700-900K in some areas. We currently make about half that in the DMV. Very specialized. If there is only one specialist in Bumchuck, Iowa then the insurance companies can't negotiate as much.

Not this nonsense again. Doctors make far less than lawyers and investment bankers, while it is harder to get into medical school than law or business, and training is at least five years longer.

Nurses and physician's assistants also make decent money relative to years of training. Guess why? There is huge demand for their sevices

Health care is a business -- the people actually doing the hard work should be compensated. If you want to complain about the injustices of our health care system, it is appropriate to look at how much is paid for health care administration, and to the various C level folks running insurance and pharmaceutical companies.

And, of course, OP, you are welcome to take your business to the lowest cost healthcare provider.

Not to mention the stress of the job. I know of two residents who committed suicide. No other profession that I'm aware of has had to pass a rule to limit work weeks to 80 hours.
Your lawyer has a bad day at work and may lose a case. Your surgeon has a bad day and you're paralyzed.
Surgeons get calls in the middle of the night if something goes wrong. Does your investment banker return your call at 2 am when you realize the dow plummeted?

Canadian here.

It's one Province, and our doctor's don't have the same insane costs for liability insurance.

Did you read the article OP? They didn't ask for lower salaries. They refused pay increases.

Doctors make far more than lawyers on average, and for good reason. But why the need to pretend that they earn less and are not compensated fairly? That’s the greed factor.

This is a cultural paradigm. Most people who live in socialist countries are ok with high taxes and lower salaries for the good of the people. In America, it's always been "I", "me", the "individual", so most people aren't willing to sacrifice for the greater good. We are also much more materialistic than most of the socialist countries; our economy is driven by consumerism. Our mantra is "It's never enough, and greed is good".

Then go live in a socialist country if you think it's so great. Oh wait...

I don't see anywhere people said doctors weren't compensated fairly. What I do see is people defending the salaries because, you know, the OP called them greedy.

OP just remarked that people in the US always want more, more, more. And sorry, that’s true, whether for doctors or anyone else. Greed is our culture and it is destroying everything.

It’s almost always the wife answering for her husband on this board...

Because the husband's work 60-80 hours weeks! It's not the easiest profession to be married to. Guess how many times they cancel surgery to stay home with a sick kid? It doesn't go over well.

Well then, marry an accountant instead. But since some of these women are marrying “the doctor” for money, they won’t do that.

I am sure there are plenty making less and less than you or your spouse. Why don't you make an example for everyone by pledging for no pay raise?

Yes, they are quite attractive when they are residents making $35K a year with $300,000 in debt. I hope others were smarter than I was and got their rich doctor after that point of their career! Trust me, there are many easier ways to marry a rich guy if you thinks that's all wives are after. Sounds like a bunch of people with an ax to grind.

If there is one thing the gold digger types are good at, it is seeing the future, even if it means waiting a little for the payout. Not saying you are one, PP, so don’t flame me. But I know the type that gets themselves in with these doctors. They often do it when the guys are still in school. They are willing to rough it for a while to make sure that they snag their doctor young before anyone else gets him.
