The travel warning has been updated to be more specific about areas that are off-limits to USG personnel. It's now limited to four neighborhoods and the ferry. The warning does not say that it only applies to USG personnel working in Mexico under Chief of Mission (Ambassador) authority, but it should. It's not meant to be a blanket prohibition on all feds -- the Ambassador doesn't have the authority to oversee all feds who are there for non-official purposes. |

This changes nothing, as did the previous travel warning. Mexico (even the Yucatán) has been sketchy for years. There is a reason it’s cheaper.
Can you go and return unscathed? Sure. But that can be said for a lot of places I wouldn’t take my family. I am shocked, SHOCKED to learn there is gambling going on in this establishment! |
Please. Some European countries have travel warnings against the US because of all the random gun violence. Yet somehow we all live here and no one is afraid to go to Florida. |
Maybe you should be afraid to go to some parts of Florida. |
Maybe we should all be afraid to get in cars because accidents kill a lot of people. I choose not to be. Live your life. Accidents can happen anywhere. I wouldn’t hang out in a Conflict zone but Cancun/playa del Carmen isn’t a conflict zone |
| And yet you could go many many many other lovely places on your vacation. Why not just do that? |
| Who is poster obsessed with travel warning? |
It means US gov can't go to those areas on official business. They advise US citizens to not go. |
It is cheap because more Americans travel to the Yucatan and Baja than anywhere in the world. It is also close in proximity. In 2017, tourism was up 17%, nearly 30M people went. That drives flight costs down and increases competition which affords more options for US tourists. |
+1 Some of you have serious anxiety issues and lack critical thinking skills and the ability to assess risk. |
Some of us realize that Playa Del Carmen is nothing special and there are lots of places to go instead. |
I love playa del Carmen and think it is special. There was a toddler who got eaten by a crocodile at Disneyworld. Life happens. Be vigilant but you can’t let anxiety rule your life. |
You’re missing the point. Is anyone arguing that Playa del Carmen is the most special place on earth? The point is you are bad at assessing risk and probably make irrational decisions in an attempt to control your out-sized anxiety. This isn’t about vacation. |
You do realize the Playa warning is not about crocodiles, right? |

The updated warning is more concerning to me. We have/had plans for staying in the restricted area. The more specific they are about the threat area, the more seriously I take the threat. I suspect there are drug/cartel people hiding out in those neighborhoods or threats to blow up buildings there (perhaps as part of drug cartel fights or intimidation).
In any case, they aren't just referencing general dangers in a metro area now....they are specifying neighborhoods to avoid. We are not going to those areas while the threat/warnings remain in effect. If that means we cancel our plans...it is what it is. We are still debating where to rebook in Cancun, but hotel prices are sky high now. Not sure it is worth salvaging our flights or just chucking the whole thing (assuming nothing changes). |
