Playa del Carmen UPDATED travel warning (Friday, 3/9 p.m.)

The more specific they are about the threat area, the more seriously I take the threat. I suspect there are drug/cartel people hiding out in those neighborhoods or threats to blow up buildings there (perhaps as part of drug cartel fights or intimidation).

In any case, they aren't just referencing general dangers in a metro area now....they are specifying neighborhoods to avoid. We are not going to those areas while the threat/warnings remain in effect. If that means we cancel our plans...it is what it is. We are still debating where to rebook in Cancun, but hotel prices are sky high now. Not sure it is worth salvaging our flights or just chucking the whole thing (assuming nothing changes).

Sounds like you're looking at this very logically and rationally. And I love Mexico. But I also don't think I'd want to stay in those neighborhoods. Just like I stopped taking the second class buses across the country after there were a number of hijackings. It's smart to pay attention to specific threats and adjust plans accordingly.

I would not stay in the specific neighborhoods mentioned in the warning. Anywhere else, yes. Sorry to you PP. That sucks.

What is with these ant Mexican posters who keep insisting the whole country is cheap, violent, and a dump?

Many people love Mexico because it is beautiful with friendly people and great food. There may be sporadic violence but that doesn’t mean it is not worth going to.

It’s one of the most corrupt militaries and police forces in the Western Hemisphere. Lots of drug cartels. Super high murder rate. Why wouldn’t you want to vacation there?

Save it for the politics forum. I think some of the anti-immigrant angry folk from there have found the Travel forum.

A LOT of places fit this description and don’t have the issues Mexico has. Why are you so bizarrely defensive of it?
