UVA vs Vanderbilt

I got in UVA Echols and Vanderbilt full tuition. Which should I choose? I'm still waiting on Duke, JHU, Chicago, Columbia, Harvard and Princeton. I wonder if I get into any I listed before, is it worth going to Vandy over it??

A big part of the puzzle is whether you are a Virginia resident and what your family's financial situation is like and what you intend to study. If your folks are loaded and $73k per year isn't a big deal, then maybe Vanderbilt. If you are in-state and your $73k a year is tough on your family (and say you have siblings planning to go to college as well), then UVA Echols makes a whole lot of sense as a value proposition.

In this instance, Vanderbilt over anything but the Ivies you mentioned. Not a tough call.

I'm a VA resident, but Vandy I got a scholarship paying for my full tuition. That's what I meant

Full tuition at vandy beats in state at uva, in my book. And I say that as a uva grad.

They probably have similar cultures (Greek, southern, preppy/Jcrew feel). Uva is a better school academically but not against free Vanderbilt.

Why would you say UVA > Vandy academically?

Have you done the math? My DS was offered $28,000 from two privates but UVA was still a much better deal financially.

Vandy offered me $44000 pretty much for every single year

What will you study? I would compare programs in detail, the national prestige of Vandy versus UVA is not too different to merit one over the other. But free money may mean a lot of love from Vandy, so that would swing my vote.

I’m a UVA alum that absolutely adores my school, but I say do Vanderbilt! You (or your parents) will be very glad to save all that money which you can put towards grad school or other costs.

Vanderbilt all the way.. It's better ranked and a lot less money. Why is that difficult?

Even if it was not better ranked - It's a lot less money. Why is that difficult?

Where are your parents in all this?

Yes, I can. Some SLACS are now high as $81,000 per year. If you subtract $28,000, the school is still more expensive than UVA at my student's tuition of $26,000. Vanderbilt is $65K. If you subtract the $28K that my DS was offered by some SLACs, the difference is STILL more than the $26,000 in-state fee he was charged when he entered. So UVA was a better deal financially than the SLACs with the $28K offer. Now, since you posted, OP has said he or she received $44K. $65K minus 44K is still $21K in the hole but a better deal than UVA, which now is @ $32K for entering students. However, if it were NYC offering the $44K, then UVA would be a better deal. Remember also that the delta between the expensive privates and in-state UVA is paid in after tax dollars, so if you are in the 40% tax bracket, you basically have to double the delta in order to pay the difference.

1. Are there conditions to keep the scholarship all four years?

2. Would saving that tuition money now make grad school a possibility or is money not a concern?
