Is European Formula Superior?

Anonymous
I’ve been hearing the hype of formula like Holle, HIPP, and and Lebenswert, and wonder if it’s worth it? I noticed they do have cleaner ingredients, but still not sure if it’s worht the price. How did you decide if it was or not?

I thought so. Didn't use much formula, but had cases of Hipp and Alete sent for both my kids. Never fed them any American baby food since the EU has much tighter controls than the US. YMMV, of course.

I used both American and European. The European one tasted better

It’s formula. It’s more expensive but that’s about it. It’s also not FDA approved as infant food

Of course not, it's approved by the EU with tighter controls than the FDA, which is ludicrous.

The question is whether those EU controls are based in science or pseudoscience.

I don’t believe the GMO woo so US formula is fine for my three headed babies and I can put the money I save in their 529s.

Seriously don’t buy into this hype about European food being better. Look critically at HiPP products. HIPP is sort of a garbage brand IMO. Everything is carby and not terribly nutritious. They have Milchreis with chocolate flakes and Zwieback toast with no nutritional value. And the obsession with Fencheltee runs counter to most American advice about not, you know, feeding your kid herbal tea when they probably need milk or formula instead. Not familiar with the other brands. But I legit found chocolate flavored formula in France. Okay? Don’t buy into the hype.

I think European IS better. Our German-born osteopath said the breeds of cows that give the milk used for formula are different and the German/Swiss ones are better suited for this purpose.

But it is also terribly overpriced here in the US. A 10 oz box of Hipp costs about $5 or $6 in my home country. Compare that to US prices. It's seriously appalling.

Divide prices by 4 and you get US dollar amounts. I understand shipping to the US is expensive but still...

I think it’s more smug. So there’s that.

Well, there are innumerable posts on here that pretty much take that approach. Everything American is just backward and horrible compared to such enlightened Europeans. It so bad in America compared to Europe that they will almost -- but not quite -- go back to Europe to live in paradise compared to this swamp.
