Have you ever walked out of an exercise class?

Over the last couple of months I’ve been trying different classes at my gym to mix up my workouts. For 2 classes that I’ve attended, it was clear within the first minute I was in over my head. I really wanted to leave but pushed through as best I could. I didn’t feel the euphoria you feel when you finish a challenging workout and have no desire to attend again.

Has this ever happened to posters here? I’m curious do you quietly exit the class or is that rude?

Yes many times. I have lower back issues and if I start to feel sensitivity there during a class I leave immediately. Quietly and discreetly of course. If someone asks, I just explain about my back and not wanting to strain it. No big deal.

Ive probably tried at least 50 different classes over the last 15 years. I would say 12 of them have became my regulars, 30 of them I never went to again, and 8 I walked out of within 20 minutes. I think its fine.

Thanks for the quick responses this makes me feel better!

Definitely walk out if you’re in over your head! I’d rather be embarrassed a tiny bit than hurt myself. I’ve walked out 3 times.

Definitely. There are many reasons to do so. I walked out once because the music was too loud.

Yep, several times.

A couple of times over the last 15 or so years. In general, it's because a regular teacher has a sub whose style of teaching I don't like. If I'm just going to be frustrated for an hour, I'd rather be elsewhere. I do feel rude, though.

I go to a couple of really difficult power yoga classes, and it's not that unusual for a self-identified newbie to leave midway through. Happens fairly often.

I walked out of a terrible yoga class once. I felt so euphoric and peaceful after I left, so it was in that sense a great class!

it's fine. its your money and your time.

It's fine, just set yourself up toward the back and close to the door if you think walking out may be a possibility. And be discreet.

I tend to think it's rude. At the very least, notify the instructor and say: "I just want to check this out, I'm not sure if it's for me" or ask questions first. Or just say "I may have to leave early for X reason, would it be ok if I stay for just part of the class?"

If it's a new class, try observing a few minutes and looking up videos online to get a sense of what you expect.

Yes. It's your body, your time, and your prerogative. Quiet and respectful is all that's required.
