Please settle an argument: is it acceptable for two office colleagues to have a glass of wine at lunch during the workday near our office?
Or is that frowned upon? I always thought it was the latter, but my friend thinks otherwise. |
| Frowned upon in the us and in some cases a fireable offense depending on the employer. |
| Acceptable in very limited circumstances (big win at work, promotion, etc.) depending on employer and responsibilities the rest of the day. Not ok on a regular basis. |
| Special occasions- like a holiday lunch or the Friday before a vacation. Otherwise no. |
| I used to work in the construction industry. Beer or wine at lunch was no big deal. I think this is very industry-specific. And varies by region as well. |
| I had lunch with 5 coworkers today, 4 of them had beer. It's not a big deal unless they can't walk back or function at the office. |
| Only on my birthday or right before the holidays |
|
I went to a private high school in France. The cafeteria had little carafes of red and white for the teachers at lunchtime. |
| That's why I get my wine in a to-go coffee cup! |
| I don't think it's appropriate, but my colleagues will get a beer if we go out to an office lunch and our boss never says anything. They are not colleagues I respect, though, so I'm not sure whether I'm uptight or they're inappropriate. |
Explains a lot about our sh*tty infrastructure. |
| A glass of wine wine a meal is fine for an adult. |
+1, especially if dining with coworkers I admit that on Thursday at lunch, when it was 70 and sunny and beautiful, I almost had a beer at lunch by myself. Didn’t, though. |
|
I have a mini fridge in my office to keep my pack of beers cold. I drink at work in my office.
Nobody knows. I know this could get me fired but I know they won't do it. I'm their best salesman. |

Clearly none of you work in finance. When I worked for JPM (not long ago) we were regulars at the 'beer and a shot' lunch specials on Stone St.
This thread is bound to be exhibit A of precisely why so many of us transplants lament the culture here in DC. |
