I caught the same details that you noticed, and the apparent conflict with the accused’s narrative. So you have that conflict + widespread attention on this case during a crisis that involves different treatment of people. Very curious how this one will turn out.

NP. I think it is worth engaging with this in the context of widespread calls for restorative justice and police abolition.

In a world in which not every "crime" deserves incarceration, what would we do with folks like this?

I beleive he should be punished. I also believe incarceration is wildly overutilized in the United States, and the PIC damages both jailer and jailee.

So, what do we do? Restorative justice? Make him apologize directly to his victims and hear about the damage of his actions? What does justice look like?

DP.. maybe you would but many non black people would not. They would want him to face jail time.

I've been thinking about why some people are so quick to defend this guy.

I think some people see themselves in this guy, a non black person, and so they they defend him. They could maybe see themselves in this guy, and of course, would want people to not be so harsh. If he was black, they would probably be the first to claim he should get jail time since they have no idea what it is like to be a black man.

It's all about empathy and being able to see through the lens of a different person.

This is montgomery county. He will not get jail time. He will likely get terms of a probation before judgement that includes therapy and community service.

PP here and that's the part the bothers me the most. If he knew others were being accused and didn't immediately turn himself in at that point then his subsequent apology is worthless. Of course I don't know what he knew. And no he's not going to jail for thirty years nor should he.

I disagree. There is nothing wrong with talking to a lawyer before turning yourself in. You would be foolish not to. Honestly, I don’t see anything wrong with not turning yourself in period. There’s no obligation to do that and often that would be a very bad move.

As for going to the priest, you could just as easily be going there to seek penance and guidance for dealing with his problems as many more nefarious motive.

Unlikely that the bike in this instance, especially starting from still would be considered a deadly weapon. The chances of serious injury in this instance are low. Most likely he'll get simple assault, although maybe more if the kid taking the video had more substantial injuries or his phone was damaged. Looks like he actually connected with that kid.
