They just don’t have the capacity or infrastructure to do this. Our school starts next week and there aren’t enough machines, staff or entrances not to make this a hot mess. This isn’t like a ballgame or concert where you can only bring in a 6x8 clear bag so it’s easy to move folks through the detectors quickly. These kids all have stuffed backpacks full of stuff with metal in them that’s going to have come out and then get repacked. |
|
My kid is at Edison and they had it from day one. The kid says the first couple days were confusing, but it’s “getting better” and he hasn’t yet been late.
This doesn’t mean it’s a good idea. But apparently some schools can do this without complete disaster. |
| How do teachers know to NOT mark kids late if their bus arrives at 8:05 and they can’t get through weapons check? Do teachers mark them late and then admin excuses? |
Its a much smaller school than others |
My son who rode the bus was marked absent several times last year for first period. Two times it was a sub-no one seemed to know what to do. I'd like to say they figured that out but as someone else mentioned there has been zero communication on metal detectors from our school. |
| Apparently Fairfax has tables next to the metal detectors so kids can just slide their stuff along next to them. That way they don’t need staff standing there taking each student’s metal items as they walk through. |
Are they checking the bags though? |
Sorry- they slide the metal stuff like computers and binders. |
This is better than making students hold laptop and 3-ring binder over head. |
| Has there been any word about when this will be implemented in middle schools? I thought it was the beginning of the school year, but we have heard literally nothing. |
I've been wondering this too. Both my kids have been late to class every day but they are not sure how teachers are marking it. I guess I'll find out soon enough! |
They aren't. They also aren't stopping kids who set off the detector. |
Admin makes announcements about this. Every morning since school started our principal has come on to let us know when weapons screening is done. The past few days it’s been 8:05 so kids are able to get to class on time. If a bus is late, they make announcements about that, too |
Then what's the point? |
| Are Apple Watches setting it off? |
