I know what my spouse makes and I and I see what's deposited into the checking account but the numbers don't jive. I'm pretty financially illiterate but I don't think this is the difference between taxes, etc. I've straight out asked him and he brushes my concerns off. How to proceed? |
do you see/can you find his pay stub? |
I can't. I'm guessing they arrive electronically, probably to his work account, which I cannot access. |
You aren't going to be able to figure this out unless you can get your hands on some financial documents. You might be able to back into it from his W-2, but that's harder because it's for the entire year. How far off is it from where you think it should be? |
If it's direct deposited from work, he can't have it put two places. I would guess it's going to his 401k ($18,500?) and insurance. |
That's not true -- every job I have ever had has the option to deposit into more than one account, either by dollar amount to one and remainder to the other, or by percentages. |
OF course he can. My pay is direct deposited from work and goes into three accounts. One joint checking, one joint savings and one is my play money account. My dh does the same. (We are compels transparent about this). |
When his 2017 W-2 arrives, take a look at it and see if the numbers line up. |
Can’t you just ask him to give you a pay stub |
Any chance he's actually making less than he told you? |
My w2 arrived at work so that may not be an option for the op. |
If he won't share a pay stub, wait until you get the W-2. Since you have to co-sign the tax return that will be an opportunity to ask him and don't sign until you are satisfied. |
I do our taxes on turbo tax and sign for it. |
Taxes, retirement and health insurance can eat up a big chunk of a paycheck. How much are you expecting the full amount to be before those things, and how much is being deposited?
Also, do you sign the tax forms? You should be able to get information there. |
Yes, PP is correct. My paycheck gets direct deposited into two separate accounts. (Not to mention what is taken out for taxes, health insurance, and retirement.) |
