"Former D.C. Mayor Marion Barry’s commemorative statue to debut March 3
The eight-foot-tall statue will be unveiled outside the John A. Wilson Building" DC's canines are hydrated and waiting! https://dc.curbed.com/2018/1/31/16955148/dc-mayor-marion-barry-statue |
| Boston has a statue of Mayor Curley. |
| It feels fitting, somehow. |
|
It’s absolutely fitting. Barry almost died in that building. You newbies and exurbanites don’t know about that.

How about a statue of Maurice Williams? He actually died in the building in the attack. |
The press room is named for him in his honor - that was done years and years ago. |
| I have a problem with spending at least $300K of tax dollars when there are more pressing public needs than to honor a corrupt, tax-cheating, racist buffoon who ran DC into the ditch before the federal control board saved us. Not to mention that instead of paying attention to good governance and delivery of municipal services, Barry was spending his time using coke and crack at a time when parts of DC were literally dying from the crack epidemic. |
BAM! Thank you. |
DC is so embarrassing at times
|
New arrivals who don't have a clue are embarrassing too. |
| Barry did not almost die in that building. He had a flesh wound. Married four times, abused women, drug addict, and too busy for his son which resulted in his death too. Absolute joke. Who suffered the most and who departed from DC during his reign? |
| He turned DC into a national joke. Can't believe that DC is spending this much money to commemorate him. At least it will give the tourists something to point at and laugh. |
“He’s a very lucky man," said Dr. Howard Champion, director of the hospital’s shock trauma center who headed the operation team that removed a small-caliber bullet. "The bullet stopped in front of his heart without penetrating bone, and there was no injury to the vital organ," Champion said. https://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/local/longterm/library/dc/barry/shooting.htm |
|
No bullet. One single shotgun pellet. If Barry knew anything it was the power of an image and ultimately it was the power of the image on tape that destroyed him. I lived through this mess in the 80s. DC police were so corrupt they would constantly alert him when he could potentially be busted. Remember his pal in the black trench coat and skull cap Chuck Lewis? Barry deserves his place in DC history but that place should not be in front of the Wilson Building as an enduring symbol of the District.
It's just that simple. |

Credited as one of the factors in expanding the black middle class of the Washington, DC area. It’s that simple. |
