My son has loved Valley Mill and the programming there that combines water, woods, archery, etc. We are interested in looking at 1-2 week overnight camps. My experience growing up was with girl scout camps or Camp Seagull. Unfortunatley Seagull is full already- missed the deadline!
Any options to recommend? |

My kids started sleepaway camp as rising 2nd graders. They both love it.
When is his birthday? I'm trying to figure out if he will be a new 8 or almost 9 by the summer. |
He will turn 8 in May - rising 3rd grader next year. He's never been to sleepaway- but has done camp and enjoyed 2 weeks at the grandparents. |
Are any of his friends going? Are you part of community that traditionally sends kids to sleepaway camps? Are you willing to consider religious camps; if so what religion...or are you only interested in secular camps? Since you mentioned Seagull, I'm guessing that 5-6 hours away via car is okay with you. I'm not a fan of 1 week camps. The first week is hard. Everything is new and you have to learn routines and expectations. It's not until the second week that you begin to find out how much fun camp is. |
Thanks for this helpful feedback! He will be going solo- which is fine with me and as he makes friends readily, him as well. My childhood camp experiences were in NC, so that's my point of reference. (Also have family/friends scattered there as a potential resource.) Would rather not select a religious camp where that's the main focus, but we are Protestants. |
| Since you were looking at Seagull, what about Camp Letts? |
Doesn't offer a two week session? I was thiniking also of two things- that I'd prefer an all boys camp and one with limited day campers. Camp Letts seems to be heavily attended with day campers and if I were to sign up for two weeks, it is not apparent that there would be continuity with a group of kids/counselors. |

My DS started going to Falling Creek Camp in NC when he was 8. They have a junior camp for boys who have never been to camp and a 2 week camp.

| i went to Triple-R Ranch in Chesapeake VA around age 8 for 1 week. Learned the camp routine in 1 day and fir me a 1 week camp was perfect at that age. |

OP my children did Valley Mill as well. They all became counselors there even through parts of college. Huge fan. They also did sleep away. But we sent them for 4 -8 weeks depending on the kid and what they wanted to do. You don't want Seagull anymore. We did it, it is not as good as it used to be. I would suggest https://www.sandyhill.com/ It might be full for this year but keep it in mind. My youngest went there and loved it way more than the fancy expensive camp we sent him to in Maine. |

Camp Letts has 2 parts, the day camp, and the sleep away camp. Even though they share a camp, they are separate and do things separately.
My kids each started at Camp Letts at age 8, and have had fabulous experiences. I like that it's time with new friends, time outside and away from cell phones, and time trying new things. They always sob on the last day, and can't wait to it back the next year! |
| Mine did camp P'uh Tok as a rising 2nd grader, it's only 5 days. |
