My kids started sleepaway camp as rising 2nd graders. They both love it. When is his birthday? I'm trying to figure out if he will be a new 8 or almost 9 by the summer.
He will turn 8 in May - rising 3rd grader next year. He's never been to sleepaway- but has done camp and enjoyed 2 weeks at the grandparents.
Are any of his friends going? Are you part of community that traditionally sends kids to sleepaway camps? Are you willing to consider religious camps; if so what religion...or are you only interested in secular camps? Since you mentioned Seagull, I'm guessing that 5-6 hours away via car is okay with you. I'm not a fan of 1 week camps. The first week is hard. Everything is new and you have to learn routines and expectations. It's not until the second week that you begin to find out how much fun camp is.
Thanks for this helpful feedback! He will be going solo- which is fine with me and as he makes friends readily, him as well. My childhood camp experiences were in NC, so that's my point of reference. (Also have family/friends scattered there as a potential resource.) Would rather not select a religious camp where that's the main focus, but we are Protestants.
