School, Fernandez and Cottman and Encinas all sued. Cottman and Encinas sued both personally and as agents of the school.

Predictable. Also sad. Feel like we dodged a bullet not getting in as it was our first choice.

Reading this makes me enraged all over again.

I hope these parents win this lawsuit, and that the rest of the victims' families also sue.

Disgusting. What do lawyer DCUMers think the likely outcome is?

Was he a convicted sex offender when they hired the teacher?

Pretty shocking that he was given such little prison time. Terrible injustice.

No. But read the lawsuit and the article linked here. There were multiple warning signs missed and information kept from parents.

The two administrators named deserve what they get. They have so many opportunities to do the right thing and put the children first. And of course MPD and the District Govt did a piss poor job too. This jumped out at me:

"a neighbor who lived across the street from Defendant LAMB reported to Defendant LAMB that Defendant Fernandez was playing with students during outdoor recess in an inappropriate manner"

Someone from outside the community had to be the first whistleblower?! And they ignored that person. That was in 2014. The school could have avoided all of this. Hats off to the male teacher who knew something was going on and tried and tried to report it.

He pled guilty to abusing 6 students.

But at least 15 more students alleged to police that he abused them.

This teacher left LAMB in 2016, as did others. It's a damn shame.

They wanted all of the benefits of independence from the larger system. Now they are going to find out the costs. They probably have insurance to cover this, but they will probably lose their coverage going forward.

I assume more lawsuits are coming.

When the case was ruled upon had the full breadth of Fernandez's bad deeds been exposed? Can he be tried for additional instances of sexual abuse of children if new children come forward? Eight years does not seem sufficient for forever alternating the lives of so many.

I'm sure he left in disgust and completely disillusioned. So sad. Do you know if he continued to teach or if he was so burned by the experience that he decided to leave the profession?

Last I heard he was substituting, but that was a year ago. I hope he's landed a full-time position.
