| Not sure where to post this, but assume the fifty and over crowd has the highest likelihood of having experience with caring for elderly parents. Seeking recommendations of skilled nursing places for Post-surgery rehabilitation for my parent who doesn’t live in the area. The Post-op care requirements will be too far beyond my ability and I don’t want my parent in a place far away from me. Thanks in advance. |
Where is your parent having their surgery? |
| We haven’t determined it yet. Would like for it to be done near me so that rehab could be close by as well. |

I work as a nurse case manager in this area.
NRH is great. People are also very pleased with Manor Care Chevy Chase. You will need to have the surgery done here and have that hospital admit her/him to rehab. As you probably know, it is almost impossible to get a direct admit from home to a rehab facility (I've actually never seen it done in the 5 years I've been doing case management). |
When my father needed to go to rehab after surgery, it was the hospital that determined where he was to go based on availability (and insurance). You may not have control over which Rehab he is sent. |
You absolutely have a choice / final day (well, the patient does) but in a practical sense the real decision maker is which rehab has an open bed, and do they accept i Durante (or do they have a Medicare bed open - if you are short stay Medicare they likely will). Then you’ll take into account the case worker/ social workers / discharge planners recommendations and those of your doctors. What’s left (if more than one) you will choose from. |
| *do they accept your insurance |
And IME, there is usually only one available- so no real choice. |
Gets very very bad reviews. |
| Thanks for the input - I just was reminded that 3 day hospital inpatient is required for skilled nursing rehab. So we will have to see what the doctor says. If that’s not possible, are there any well-regarded home health care places that can send help to your home? |
Most rehab places do. It's pretty much about choosing the lesser of available evils. I have had many patients happy at Manor Care at Chevy Chase. You can do much worse, trust me. |
| How about Sibley and their rehabilitation? I have had my mom in three in the last 5 years and have nothing good to say about any of them. Sibley is newer at least. |

We had a relative who recently used a rehab facility after surgery. The relative ended up at a rehab facility that had very poor reviews all around but it was the only one with an open bed that could meet the medical needs. We went into the situation with a little trepidation and, frankly, I walked out that first night in tears. However, our relative received absolutely outstanding care.
The difference was that the facility was so close by that I could be there in 5 minutes. That meant I was bopping in and out all day. The staff never knew when I was coming and so they learned that they always needed to be on top of the relative's situation. On the other hand, the unfortunate people who did not get a lot of visitors did languish and did not benefit from the same high level of staff attention. Oddly, a friend's mom had a similar situation in the same facility a few months ago. He actually chose the facility because it was easy for him to get to. Because he also could be flexible in timing his visits, he purposefully kept his visits irregular. His mom flourished and left a good couple of weeks earlier than he had anticipated. So my advice, OP, is that if your parent is going into rehab, make sure the facility is close by and be a frequent visitor. |
