2026-2027 calendar updates

The fact that this calendar has a survey every year is ridiculous. Other school districts can plan a two year calendar and release it no problem. Everything in this district doesn't need to be managed by consensus.

Just give the teachers the PD days and let them choose how to use them.

I’m teaching summer school too. They made the daily hours longer, they made the number of weeks longer, and now they’re making the summer shorter.

Not what I had hoped 😟

MD required specific PD topics by law

But obviously TT is hoping to keep teachers happy with “fire ribbons.”

I assume it will be worse for the teachers to have kids slowly streaming in the first 3 days of school. Seems like this will mean starting off with 2 fewer days of actual instruction. If teachers miss 3 days of preservice, I feel for them and hope they don't lose leave days because of it. Taylor and the BOE have done a lot of stupid things, this is one on a very long list of them.

Of course they will have to take leave if they don’t show up for work.

That sucks because in order to show up many will have to lose money on travel that has been booked or other jobs. I don't know about you but I think that's a 5h!tty way to treat my kid's wonderful teachers.

I hope teachers are pushing MCPS to choose another option, and for the union to negotiate to allow makeups as 1/2 days on grading and reporting. Otherwise they will need to show up as early as Aug 10th.

MCEA told teachers there is nothing they can do except fill out the survey, unfortunately. I agree that they could be doing more to push Taylor and the board. But they didn't even poll teachers.

MCEA has no input on the calendar.

They have impact on the grading days. That’s what TT is targeting. He wants MCEA to relent on that contract requirement.

I support MCEA holding firm on this. TT and BOE have multiple other options that don't harm teachers. TT chose violence.

Chose violence?

How is what TT's proposal to start a few days earlier violent?

Google the phrase "choose violence"

I recommend looking up "violence" in a dictionary.

I'm supposed to teach summer school, but if this earlier start date happens, I decided I'm not doing it. Good luck to MCPS finding enough ESY teachers.

the more i read this thread and talk to others irl about this, the more I really think it's going to go very poorly if they institute this change this year. I definitely see litigation if many have nonrefundable tickets and plans that they are impacted. it's not fair that people have to choose between sending their kids to school (or working if you're a teacher) and eating thousands of dollars that they've already spent.

Agree. That's why I hope this is a play to make the union negotiate on the grading and reporting days.

I'm the PP who teaches ESY in the summer. Our union rep said to expect the earlier start date so that is what I'm anticipating. I really hope our rep is wrong.

Anonymous wrote:Are any MCEA members on this thread? I'm curious if MCEA has sent any communication with their members about anything going on behind the scenes (if anything is going on).

Yes, there are MCEA members on this thread. I am an MCEA member and stated earlier that we were told by the union president, David Stein, that MCEA could do nothing. They said the only thing teachers could do was fill out the MCPS survey related to the calendar changes. I realize the union could be talking to Taylor or the Board behind the scenes, but they did not survey members or anything.

If they do hold school those days, they’ll need to treat them like a 2-3 day orientation where no work is assigned and no real teaching happens. And let parents know that ahead of time.

You know how these weekly “fire ribbons” work, right? If you are the recipient, then you (the staff member who received the blue ribbon with a sticker on it) must submit another staff member’s name to admin within the week and write a few paragraphs about the person (saying all wonderful things about them and why they should be recognized, etc.). It becomes one more thing to do. Additionally, (at least at my school) you have to look up previous recipients to find someone who hasn’t received the award.
