| I have been with my agency for five years. I asked recently about alternative work schedules - doing my 40 hrs over four days M-Th and not working any Fridays. As far as I can tell from the OPM website, this is allowed as a "compressed week". My agency is telling me that while they have no policy against it, the payroll system will reject such a schedule. I think they are simply trying to dodge the issue. Any thoughts on this? Has anyone heard of OPM not allowing the compressed week? |

It’s allowed but they don’t have to let you do it. Perhaps they’re not okay with it for coverage purposes and are giving you the runaround. Without knowing your specific agency’s pay system it’s hard to say if they’re being truthful.
Why don’t you just do the standard 8-9s, 1-8, and every other Friday off schedule? I bet they’d take you more seriously. |
| looks like your agency is reluctant...it's a sore topic at times if many have abused it in the past...agree with trying the every other Friday and see what they say. |
| I’ve never heard of any agency allowing two AWS day’s per pay period. |
My former agency within Commerce allowed this. They offered an alternate work schedule and a compressed work schedule (where you could work 4, 10 hour days per week) and other options. But, I believe they did have to get it approved through OPM. My current agency just offers an AWS where you work 9 days per pay period. |
The SEC permits it. You work 10.5 hours/day four days/week. Most people do 5/4/9 instead, though (if they do an AWS at all). |
| My current bureau doesn't allow 10 hour days. Most everyone is on a 9 (actually 9.5) hour schedule. A previous bureau I was it within my department allowed 10 hour days. |
| My agency has the compressed work week, as does DH's and my SIL's (and they both work it, with every Friday off). Three different payroll systems. But that doesn't mean your office has adopted it as an available option. Your supervisor should be able to provide you a copy of your office's allowed work schedules. |
| Do you have a maxi flex option? You have to work 80 hours in a biweekly pay period. |
| My agency technically allows it, but most supervisors don't permit it. I know of only one person who is on the 4/10 schedule. I wouldn't permit my staff to have that schedule based on the nature of our work. |
| My agency within Interior allows it for some positions, requires it for some (seasonally for long field days), and forbids it for some (where coverage is needed and everyone has to work the same schedule). |
| OP does your agency have “core hours” that might figure into this? |
| My agency allows all sorts of AWS. We have a lot of people on 5/4/9 and a lot on 4 10’s. We can also work saturdays as part of our normal work week. Our core hours are Wednesday’s between like 10-2. But we all work very independently and our work has zero impact on anyone else. It’s very very flexible. |
| Somebody please indulge me here: WTH is 5/4/9? Thanks! |
It should be written 5/4-9 (as OPM does) but it refers to working 80 hours in 9 days instead of 10 -- i.e., 5 days the first week and 4 the next. In theory you could split the hours many different ways but the most commonly allowed is 8 nine-hour days and 1 eight-hour day. What OP wants, 4 tens or 80 hours in 8 days, is allowed by OPM but much less common. Most people don't want to be at work that long and a lot of traditional offices don't need coverage 10 hours at a time -- they need the hours spread over more days. OP, who does your pay checks? I think the excuse that pay service can't handle it is BS, but supervisor doesn't have to let you work a compressed schedule so it doesn't matter. |
