| My driver's side mirror is banged up, so I planned to buy the whole part online and DH was going to remove/install, but not sure if it's worth the time and effort for him to get around to it. If I have the part, can I take it somewhere for someone to install? Like a regular mechanic? The installation requires removing the inside door panel to reach the electronics/bolts for the side mirror. Do I have to find a body shop specifically and will a body shop use my part or want to order their own brand new part? There's also a dent in the side panel that a body shop will likely want to fix too, but not sure if I care about fixing it right now and having to pay for it, so I think this will also make them unhappy about doing the side mirror job. Or are there techs I can find that will freelance and where? |
I had my auto repair shop do it for me. I think it was around $150. It worked out. I've also taken it to the dealer and they did it for me. I've had two side mirrors taken out because of my narrow garage. I ordered the part online. But I think the dealer would have done that for me. I think it's worth it take to someone to do. It seems complicated and better to pay the money. |
By auto repair shop, you mean a regular mechanic right? Like the same one that would do an oil change or other services, not specifically a body shop? |
| Look for a youtube video. We replaced one very easily. Ordered the part from Amazon and did the work ourselves. We are not car people either. |
| I paid about $160 for the same thing. |

Just do it yourself. It's very, very easy.
Otherwise, you're basically admitting that some guy with greasy hands who never went to college is smarter than you. |
Yes, our mechanic. |
| the hardest part of the job is getting the door panel off with out screwing up the plastic clips that break easily |
It depends on the car. Some cars are easier to work on and take apart than others. Generally when you go in for repairs or work done, they'll break the costs down between labor and parts. The expensive part usually comes from the labor. But you should be able to just take the part into a shop and they just won't charge you for the part. There might still be some shop fees along with the labor. If they bring up the dent, you can just tell them you don't want to fix it at the moment. As previous poster mentioned, I might consider looking up some videos to see how hard it would be to change the part yourself. btw just beacause someone may not have gone to college doesn't necessarily make them smarter or not as smart as someone else. There are different types of smart. And what might make sense to one person may be hard for someone else to understand and learn. |
| forgot to mention for your side mirror, you can take it to any mechanic or shop to ask them to do. It doesn't have to be a body shop. |
Funny thing is, in many ways auto mechanics are smarter than you - even if they didn't go to college. |
| I suggest going to a place that fixes cars. |
It's a matter of time and effort. Sure, my hubby can do it after a few YouTube clips and when he's on leave in two weeks. But will it take him 3 hours and some cursing at the stupid plastic clips vs 1 hour from an experienced mechanic next week? Thanks everyone! |
Yes, that would be my DH cursing and breaking plastic clips. Would not be worth the angst. |
hehe. This reminds me of when my DH was installing cabinet locks for childproofing. I felt guilty for asking him to do it. |
