It depends on the car.  Some cars are easier to work on and take apart than others.

Generally when you go in for repairs or work done, they'll break the costs down between labor and parts.  The expensive part usually comes from the labor.  But you should be able to just take the part into a shop and they just won't charge you for the part.  There might still be some shop fees along with the labor.  If they bring up the dent, you can just tell them you don't want to fix it at the moment.

As previous poster mentioned, I might consider looking up some videos to see how hard it would be to change the part yourself.

btw just beacause someone may not have gone to college doesn't necessarily make them smarter or not as smart as someone else.  There are different types of smart.  And what might make sense to one person may be hard for someone else to understand and learn.[/quote]
