I may be an outlier, but 30 years is a super long time. I think as a country we need to evaluate the length of sentences. After time people are not even the same as who they used to be.

Because he is mentally ill. Should we lock up everyone, forever, because they are mentally ill?

It's DC.

Then he needs treatment along with jail time. No amount of prison time will cure mental illness.

From the article:
Defense attorneys for Johnson told the judge that he suffers from mental illness and had been sleeping on the streets for days before the murder. He had been discharged from a psychiatric facility because he had no insurance, they said.

If true as presented, this is incredibly tragic. An innocent woman suffered unknown horror and death because he was kicked out of a facility for lack of insurance.

So again, an extended amount of jail time is pointless

NP. If he serves all of the 30 year sentence (unlikely), he will be 60 when he is released. He will be 60, with maybe-treated-or-maybe-untreated mental illness, no hope of a job. If he has family, he may be able to live with them, although that seems unlikely.

What will he do when he is released? What is the point? Either give him a sentence with a hope of a life afterward or imprison him for life or, if we as a society deem his life of no value or his crime of such awfulness, then just kill him right now.

I think our sentencing system needs to be 100% rethought and overhauled.

30 years where he will not be able to do this again and hopefully will get the treatment he needs to avoid the risk that he gets off on some technicality and then is wandering the streets free and still untreated.

I think people who rape deserve the death penalty. Same for people who molest children and murderers.

It's not pointless. Why didn't you take him in after being released? Better yet, take your a&* down to the local hospital and taken one in that is being released.

I have a violent mentally ill brother and I am a POC. Yes, mental illness is horrible, but sometimes keeping them in hospitals, force feeding them meds is no better solution.

I don't understand your post. Who should have taken him in to where when he was discharged for inability to pay?

I'm not sure what you mean -- that it's better for mentally ill people to be in a facility or better for them not to be.

I am thankful that my uncle was arrested and convicted of attempt before he was able to hurt anyone (or maybe he did hurt people before he was caught, I'll never know), that he will be transferred to a mental institute when his prison term is up rather than released.

I think people who commit murder should be given life, mentally insane or not.

The victim herself probably wouldn't even want him to spend that long in prison. That's awful. That's practically the bulk of his life. He'll be an old man when he gets out. So sad.

The famous case of the man who raped a girl. In Seattle and for whatever reason cut off her arms. When released from prison as an "old harmless man" he raped and killed. I agree we need mental health care, but once it's gotten to this point he needs treatment and lifetime incarceration. I honestly can't believe people think the sentence is too short. Women's lives are worth nothing it seems.
