Then he needs treatment along with jail time. No amount of prison time will cure mental illness.

From the article:
Defense attorneys for Johnson told the judge that he suffers from mental illness and had been sleeping on the streets for days before the murder. He had been discharged from a psychiatric facility because he had no insurance, they said.

If true as presented, this is incredibly tragic. An innocent woman suffered unknown horror and death because he was kicked out of a facility for lack of insurance.

So again, an extended amount of jail time is pointless

He raped and murdered an innocent woman. Being mentally ill does not give him the license to do that and the vast majority of mentally ill people are not violent towards others.

Yes, he needs to be in jail. He needs to stay in jail.

It would be better for him to get out of jail and murder some other innocent, unsuspecting person? Maybe next time it would be your sister, daughter, mother, best friend....

It is possible to be criminally insane. And the criminally insane need to be locked up.

I just don't think taking away the balance of another persons life, even if they did a bad thing, is right. You're basically advocating that his life is destroyed, too. Plus, the justice system is fundamentally racist and prejudiced, so it's highly likely he did not receive a fair trial, and when serving his sentence, he will receive very little in the way of rehabilitation. Our entire system of dealing with lawbreakers is flawed. All the emphasis is on punishment, rather than rehabilitation. So yes, I do believe it's a travesty to sentence him for so long. Two wrongs don't make a right. And there's absolutely no proof that he would ever harm anyone else again, either. You can't see the future. No one can.

Yes, such a shame Manson died in prison. Not.

If you rape and murder another human being it is a reasonable consequence that you have ruined your own life in the process. You are not a person that should be out walking the streets.

He very violently RAPED and KILLED an innocent woman that he did not know and who had done nothing to him - there is no reason to assume that he would not do that again. Nothing stopped him from doing it the first time did it?

He might not value human life, he may not care that this young woman is dead. But most people DO care.

You should save this compassion for the many POC who are wrongly accused and convicted of crimes they did not commit. This man raped and killed an innocent woman. He deserves this and more.

I agree we need mental health care, but once it's gotten to this point he needs treatment and lifetime incarceration. I honestly can't believe people think the sentence is too short. Women's lives are worth nothing it seems.

It was in California and his name was Lawrence Singleton. When he was 50 he raped a 15 year old girl, cut off her arms, and then threw her off a 30 foot cliff. She miraculously survived. He was convicted and only served 8 years of a 15 year sentence. There was a public outcry when he was released and no community in California would allow him to live there without protest. He then moved to Florida where he killed a 31 year old mother when he was 70 years old.

Yes, this was the case that convinced me sexual violence against women and children is treated in such a skewed fashion in our country. I do have sympathy for mental illness and we need far more treatment and rehabilitation, but the recidivism for sexual violence in particular calls for incarceration not only to "punish" but more to protect society.

Agreed. I can’t believe someone is arguing otherwise.

What if I were to decide YOU were mentally ill because you (obviously) voted for trump? Then we could lock you away.

Do that still seem like a good idea when framed in that way?

Agree. The UAE has a great criminal justice system. We should replicate it.

We can wrap the thread up with two points:

1. The person claiming the sentence is too harsh is an obvious troll. Don’t feed.

2. I’m amazed the sentence is as long as it is. This is DC. We’re fortunate the rapist/murderer wasn’t given a verbal warning or a stern talking-to.
