| The news out of Penn State today is so disturbing. There is zero positive benefit to having fraternities and sororities. Everyone who went to college and reads the news knows this. It has got to end. Obama should have had his department of education do something because surely Trump and Betsey DeVos will not touch it because they pretty much epitomize a frat bro and a sorority sister. |

Honestly I had a great time in my college sorority, so many wonderful memories of frat parties. With that being said I am disturbed by some of the stories of what happens at some frats.
But I dont know if they ALL need to be done away with... |
| Apartment parties are not necessarily safer! |
Meatheads will always find ways to kill themselves and each other. |
| Dorm parties. Back in the day, they would have a party in a dorm room. They would remove the back wall of the closet creating an opening into the dorm room next door. When the RA heard partying in the one room and knocked on the door to bust it up (and write people up), the party goers would simply go through that closet into the next room, the wall would be set in place....and when they opened the door the RA would stand there scratching their head at the empty room. |
| OP here and I had a lot of fun too but looking back on it I am lucky I made it out alive and without being sexually assaulted. Probably only because I played a coed varsity sport so had fraternity brothers looking after me. I remember being told "don't drink that", etc. and I think they have gotten much worse recently. |
|
Uhhhh, no.
"I think they have gotten much worse recently." |
|
I have seen studies that suggest that the rate of binge drinking has actually gone up in college age people since the drinking age was raised even though the number of college age people who drink has gone down. That seems to indicate that the number of people who drink responsibly has also gone down.
Most college age people do drink at least somewhat. |
| I think the non fraternity parties are much, much worse. They just aren't associated with a big name that the college can blame. |
I think this is very true. |
| Oh and sororities don't host parties, so I know OP is not Greek. Don't bash things you have no clue about. |
| Americans’ collective tolerance for senseless deaths seems pretty high. |
|
My sorority hosted parties, but the main drinking was done at frat parties.
But I'm also one of those people who barely made it out alive. If there were cell phones in those days - OMG. I don't understand how Universities are measuring the value-add vs. the risk of having Frats. I guess some major lawsuit is going to have to set a precedent. |
| Why are you trying to make this political? It is up to the universities, not the federal government. The government cannot disallow clubs and organizations. |
Fray boys are apparently 3x as likely to rape: https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2014/sep/24/rape-sexual-assault-ban-frats Relevant excerpt: "numerous studies have found that men who join fraternities are three times more likely to rape, that women in sororities are 74% more likely to experience rape than other college women" |
